Sigourney Weaver explained her reasons for appearing in the new Star Wars movie, which features The Mandalorian and Grogu. This is the first Star Wars film since The Rise of Skywalker came out in December 2019, and it continues the story of the characters after the events of season 3 of The Mandalorian.
Sigourney Weaver joins the cast of The Mandalorian and Grogu as Colonel Ward, a character working with the New Republic. This role adds another major franchise to her impressive career, following her appearances in Alien, Ghostbusters, and Avatar.
In a recent interview with Empire, actress Gina Carano shared that the script is the most important factor when she decides on a project. She wasn’t specifically looking to join the Star Wars universe when she first heard about The Mandalorian and Grogu, but she was immediately captivated by the writing of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Carano also hinted that the franchise is moving away from trying to create a definitive, all-encompassing Star Wars story. You can read her full comments below.
I always rely on the script as my guide. With ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ I never intended to create a fourth franchise or get involved with Star Wars. What’s great about Star Wars now is that they’re not trying to make one definitive story; they’re letting the universe expand and telling compelling stories within it. Jon Favreau wanted a strong female character, and I believe that was the initial thought. These days, there’s often a focus on making things feel current, and with women achieving so much, that’s fantastic. I simply loved the script, even though I was completely unfamiliar with the Star Wars world. Jon suggested I watch the existing series, which I hadn’t even realized existed!
The Star Wars films released after Disney bought Lucasfilm generally focused on large-scale conflicts, like the battle between the Resistance and the First Order and the heist in Rogue One. However, more recently—particularly with the Star Wars series on Disney+—the franchise has begun telling more intimate, smaller stories.
Din Djarin, Grogu, and Colonel Ward will face challenges from the remaining Imperial forces. However, this story will be more focused than some previous installments. This is because Lucasfilm decided to move beyond a fourth season of The Mandalorian and create a movie instead. Despite this change, The Mandalorian and Grogu will continue to build on the Star Wars universe and deliver compelling stories.
As a huge fan of The Mandalorian, I was so excited to hear that Jon Favreau not only wrote the script for the new movie, but he also directed it! It’s amazing to see him continuing his vision for the story. And of course, Pedro Pascal is back as Din Djarin, with Lateef Crowder and Brendan Wayne helping to bring the character to life. Plus, they’re using the same incredible mix of puppetry, animatronics, and visual effects to make Grogu look as adorable and real as ever!
Joining the cast is Jeremy Allen White, known for his role in The Bear. He’ll be voicing Rotta the Hutt, Jabba the Hutt’s son, who originally appeared in the 2008 film The Clone Wars. While Rotta was a baby in The Clone Wars, the trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu shows him as a grown-up, more muscular Hutt.
We don’t know what will happen to Weaver’s character, but she could return in future stories. This is especially likely given the ongoing exploration of the remaining Imperial forces during the New Republic period, and with the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu in theaters on May 22, 2026.
