7 Dragon Ball Multiverse “What-If” Ideas That Beat Dragon Ball Super

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball became popular when it first appeared in the 1980s, and it’s been amazing to see the series grow and develop over time. It started as a fun mix of comedy and action, but has become a massive battle series with hundreds of hours of content across many different shows. While there’s a lot of official Dragon Ball story to enjoy, fans also love to imagine alternate scenarios and explore “What If?” possibilities. Dragon Ball video games are particularly good at introducing these interesting alternate storylines, giving fans plenty to think about.

I’m a huge fan of “What If…?” stories, and lately, with everything leaning into the multiverse, they’re more popular than ever! That’s why I’m so excited about Dragon Ball Multiverse. This fan-made series, started way back in 2008 by Salagir and Gogeta Jr., isn’t just fun alternate takes on the Dragon Ball universe – it’s genuinely fantastic! Honestly, some of the storylines they’ve created are even more compelling than what we got in Dragon Ball Super. It’s a real love letter to the series and a must-read for any Dragon Ball enthusiast.

Fusion first gained popularity in Dragon Ball Z, and fans were initially worried when Goku used the Potara Earrings, which were said to create a permanent bond. However, with Super Buu proving to be a powerful enemy, Goku and Vegeta were forced to try it. While Vegito’s fusion ended when he absorbed Super Buu in Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Multiverse imagines a different outcome: what if Vegito remained fused? In this alternate timeline, Vegito becomes Earth’s strongest hero and eventually has a daughter named Bra with Bulma.

In this alternate timeline, Kid Buu isn’t reborn as Uub, allowing Pan and Bra to receive all of Vegito’s training and rapidly become incredibly powerful Super Saiyans. Gohan also takes on the responsibility of Earth’s Guardian, giving his life new meaning. While it’s sad to think of Goku and Vegeta potentially disappearing as individuals, this future would offer a rewarding path for the series, finally focusing on the next generation as originally intended during the Buu Saga in Dragon Ball Z.

Okay, so imagine a Dragon Ball universe where Goku doesn’t stop Krillin from finishing off Vegeta after their fight on Earth. It leads to some seriously fascinating “What If?” scenarios, and believe it or not, Captain Ginyu is right in the middle of it all! Dragon Ball Super tried to bring Ginyu back during the Frieza saga, but honestly, it felt like a wasted opportunity and just turned him into a joke. But this fan-made story, Dragon Ball Multiverse? It’s brilliant! It gives Ginyu a genuinely clever role and, surprisingly, makes King Cold a much more compelling character too.

Ginyu quickly swaps bodies with Nail, then deceives Frieza and takes over King Cold’s body. Frieza kills both Goku and what he believes to be Ginyu, unaware that the real Ginyu is now inhabiting King Cold. This allows Ginyu to push King Cold’s body to its limits, unlocking powerful new transformations. This storyline is a more compelling use of these characters than what Dragon Ball typically offers.

When Buu absorbs other characters, it creates challenging situations. While Buu is already incredibly powerful, absorbing opponents makes him even more dangerous, granting him their abilities. In Dragon Ball Multiverse, a version of Buu – known as Zen Buu or Universal Buu – appears as the result of absorbing Earth’s most powerful heroes. He first absorbs Vegeta and Goku, then consumes the remaining Saiyans. Interestingly, Goku’s personality within Buu creates a conflicted character who is as likely to do good as he is to cause harm.

Zen Buu absorbs Kibito Kai and then uses the Dragon Balls to bring back everyone he’d previously defeated. The concept of a more powerful Buu acting as a cosmic guardian has a lot of promise. Dragon Ball Super hasn’t quite given Buu a meaningful role, but it would be interesting to see a storyline where Buu’s hidden identity as Grand Supreme Kai takes over and motivates him to become something greater.

In Dragon Ball, Namekians can become stronger by fusing with others of their race. This ability first appears when Piccolo merges with Nail and later with Kami while on the planet Namek. Dragon Ball Super establishes that Namekians can repeat this process endlessly, as long as there are still Namekians available to fuse with. During the Tournament of Power, several Namekians repeatedly fused to maximize their power. This concept reaches its peak in Dragon Ball Multiverse, where nearly the entire Namekian population merges into a single, incredibly powerful being called Gast Carcolh.

The fusion is intended to give Namek a chance against Frieza, but it unexpectedly makes Gast Carcolh powerful enough to defeat even Cell and Majin Buu. While Dragon Ball Super has found ways to make Piccolo important again, this incredibly powerful Namekian fusion would be a truly frightening opponent. Similarly, Dragon Ball Multiverse presents a scenario where King Piccolo and Kami fuse to combat the Saiyan invasion, succeeding and then starting another era of King Piccolo’s rule.

Future Trunks is a fan-favorite character in the Dragon Ball series, known for his impactful appearances in Dragon Ball Z. He successfully returned to his timeline, defeated his enemies, and secured a peaceful future, having saved two different worlds. While Dragon Ball Super brought him back, many fans felt it diminished his previous achievements, stalled his character growth, and relied too heavily on nostalgia without offering meaningful development. Fortunately, the Dragon Ball Multiverse continues his story in a way that honors his past and offers fresh, creative possibilities.

Future Trunks keeps fighting, but he’s now using knowledge gained from the original Dragon Ball Z timeline. He manages to find and reactivate Android 16 with help from Future Bulma. Though an unusual pair, Future Trunks and Android 16 work incredibly well together. Many fans would love to see Android 16 return, and bringing him back as Future Android 16 is a great idea. The “Future” Trunks saga in Dragon Ball Super would have been even stronger with Android 16 as a companion.

While Dragon Ball is Akira Toriyama’s most famous work, he created a lot of other content, some of which is connected to Dragon Ball. There have been official crossovers between Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump, but that’s just a small part of his overall body of work. The Dragon Ball Multiverse concept suggests that all of Toriyama’s series – including Dr. Slump, Neko Majin Z, and Sand Land – exist within the same universe. This even includes his work on popular video games like Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger.

Akira Toriyama’s influence is still felt through his ‘Tori-bot’ avatar. Dragon Ball has always been open to fun crossovers, even teaming up with One Piece and Toriko in a special event. While Dragon Ball Super explores multiple universes, it generally keeps things familiar. A universe built from Toriyama’s other creative ideas would be a wonderful tribute to him, even if it’s presented in a subtle and self-contained way.

Goku and Krillin’s early friendship and training with Master Roshi were incredibly important for both of them. But it’s fascinating to imagine what would have happened if Krillin hadn’t met Goku and trained alone. In this alternate scenario, Krillin becomes Earth’s strongest fighter and eventually takes on a role similar to Master Roshi. A surprising result of this change is that Dr. Gero never builds the Androids.

In this alternate timeline, the Androids weren’t built to defeat Goku, which means they don’t exist. Instead, Yamcha has become significantly stronger through cybernetic enhancements, similar to Mercenary Tao. While not the main focus of the story, this gives Yamcha a much-needed power boost and keeps him involved. Interestingly, Cooler, rather than Frieza, is the head of the World Trade Organization in this version of events, though this doesn’t have a big impact on the plot.
