Nicolas Cage insists a strange experience on his latest movie set wasn’t due to any supernatural forces, despite playing the father of Jesus in the film. In his new horror movie, the Academy Award winner portrays Joseph, Jesus’s father.
Nicolas Cage recently shared a story with Entertainment Weekly about a bee-related incident on the set of his latest film, which reminded him of a memorable scene from his 2006 movie, The Wicker Man. In that film, Cage famously reacted to bee stings while yelling, “Not the bees!” However, he explained that the bees weren’t actually in his new movie, The Carpenter’s Son; they were just an unexpected occurrence during filming.
Nicolas Cage chuckled about the viral moment with the bees during filming. His new movie, The Carpenter’s Son, arrives in theaters November 14th, where he plays Joseph alongside Noah Jupe as Jesus and FKA twigs as Mary. While Cage doesn’t see the film as horror, the director, Lotfy Nathan, acknowledges some viewers might. Before the premiere, some people online called the movie blasphemous. As for the bees becoming a memorable part of the film, that wasn’t planned – it was simply a mistake on set.
According to Cage, the incident wasn’t due to anything supernatural, but simply poor planning during location scouting. Someone clearly hadn’t checked to see that the bees in that area were protected. He joked that he’d be upset too if a film crew invaded his home and shined lights everywhere. It was a ridiculous situation – he doesn’t know who thought it was a good idea – and they kept insisting on filming there even after people started getting stung and sick. He thought it was a really unwise decision.
He explained the bee problem wasn’t caused by anything supernatural, but by carelessness. He said there was a lack of respect for nature and animals. The film’s director, Lotfy Nathan, stated that during filming, they arrived at a new location – a remote mountaintop set built as a leper colony. The art department had used a chemical to finish the set, which unexpectedly attracted a large swarm of wasps overnight. No one realized this had happened until the morning they were scheduled to film there.
Nathan explained that they were forced to close things down that day, and it caused quite a bit of trouble. While some people speculated it was a miracle, he believed it was probably just a swarm of wasps.
National Treasure 3 Could Still Happen
With Nicolas Cage preparing for his new film, The Carpenter’s Son, a third National Treasure movie is now potentially in development. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently mentioned in an interview that after almost twenty years since the second film, plans are underway to finish the National Treasure trilogy.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer indicated they are making progress on a third National Treasure movie. He anticipates that if the film moves forward, both director Jon Turteltaub and actor Nicolas Cage will be involved. Cage previously played the lead role of treasure hunter and codebreaker Ben Gates in the first two films, but he did not appear in the 2022 Disney+ series Edge of History.
The Carpenter’s Son will premiere in movie theaters on Nov. 14.
