Despite initially being considered a box office disappointment, Tom Cruise’s action movie Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is now performing very well on Netflix, becoming a popular choice for viewers worldwide.
Following the 2012 movie Jack Reacher (also starring Tom Cruise as the main character), the 2016 sequel again features Cruise as the former Military Police Investigator.
The story, inspired by Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels, follows Jack Reacher as he investigates a possible conspiracy when a friend is accused of murder. He quickly finds himself a fugitive, working alongside her to uncover the truth.

While the Reacher series on Prime Video has been a success, the movie Jack Reacher: Never Go Back didn’t do well in theaters, which means a third film in the series is unlikely.
Even though the movie wasn’t well-received when it first came out, it’s become popular on Netflix. Currently, it’s the second most-watched film worldwide on the platform, behind Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite, according to data from FlixPatrol.

When the movie came out, The Standard wasn’t impressed, giving it only two out of five stars. Their review stated the film was so boring, they actually wanted the villains to win.
The movie received a poor score on Rotten Tomatoes, with only 37% of critics recommending it based on 244 reviews. Many critics found it to be fairly ordinary.
Entertainment Weekly jokingly called the new movie “the sequel no one asked for to a film hardly anyone remembers.” The AV Club was even more critical, describing it as “almost ridiculously generic, beginning with its silly title.”
Okay, so as far as crime thrillers go, it’s not the most original story – I could kind of guess what was going to happen. But honestly? I was really drawn in by the characters. They were so well-developed, and I loved seeing how their relationships changed throughout the movie. Plus, there were some genuinely exciting action scenes and a surprising amount of funny moments thrown in, which was a nice touch. That’s what really made it work for me, according to a review in The Philadelphia Enquirer.

Okay, so I was really excited for the sequel, but Flavorwire pretty much crushed my hopes. They said it wasn’t just forgettable after watching it, but actually boring while it was happening – just a really bland and generic action movie. Ouch!
In his memoir, Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood, director and co-writer Edward Zwick discussed the film’s failure, as reported by Variety.
Tom Cruise and I made Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in 2016, but it didn’t do well in theaters,” he said. “I think the problem was that Don Granger and I tried to combine the Jack Reacher style with the feel of the movie Paper Moon. Audiences just wanted a straightforward action film.
