The Downton Abbey Sisters Have Come A Long Way, But There’s One Thing Laura Carmichael Thinks Edith Would Never Admit To Mary Out Loud

For over ten years, audiences have loved Downton Abbey, largely because of the meaningful relationships between its characters. While many franchises feature compelling connections, Downton Abbey truly excels at portraying strong family bonds. The dynamic between Lady Mary and Lady Edith evolved throughout the series and even in The Grand Finale, and Laura Carmichael shared a funny detail about something her character would never say to her sister.

Fans will remember that the Crawley sisters began the series with very different personalities and beliefs. From their views on life and relationships to their politics and style, they seemed completely opposite. For a long time, it appeared they would never be able to find common ground.

I recently spoke with Laura Carmichael and asked her what one secret she believed her character, Edith, would never reveal to Mary. She had a surprising answer, which she shared with me.

I think she’d probably admire her appearance, commenting on how well-dressed she always is. While they’ll reconnect, their relationship won’t be entirely harmonious – more like a friendly rivalry. However, she does seem to become a little more understanding. She looks amazing in that red dress, and it’s something she’d likely mention – probably a small, sisterly observation.

Lady Mary looks absolutely stunning in that red dress – it’s worthy of being featured in Bridgerton, which is high praise! When Edith first sees Mary wearing it, she genuinely tells her she’ll be a hit. It’s clear Edith is admiring Mary, not envious, though perhaps there’s a tiny bit of wishing she looked that good herself – because Mary really does look fantastic.

It’s remarkable how far these characters have come. Initially, Edith was determined to make life difficult for Mary, but in the recent film, she’s the one trying to protect Mary from a damaging divorce. Their fortunes have completely flipped. Mary started the series as the dominant sister, always one step ahead, but now Edith is the one in a position of power and influence.

I’ve been watching their story unfold, and it’s amazing to see how far they’ve come. There was a time when she would have definitely used anything against Mary, but they’ve both grown so much. They finally understand each other, and it’s like a long-hidden affection has blossomed into real love. Honestly, it’s the most layered and complicated relationship on the show, and that’s saying something considering all the drama!

The warmth and fondness between the characters continue in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. If you’re excited to find out what happens to the sisters or want to see Mary in her famous red dress, you can now watch it by subscribing to Peacock.

It doesn’t look like there will be any more Downton Abbey shows, though you never know for sure. If Mary and Edith do return, I expect their relationship as sisters will continue to improve. However, like Carmichael points out, a little bit of competition between them is probably inevitable – it’s just part of who they are.
