Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Cast Tease the Show’s ‘Bittersweet’ End

Filming for Season 5 is already happening. This will be the final season of the Paramount+ show about Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, telling their story before Captain James T. Kirk becomes captain.

The cast and crew of Strange New Worlds recently shared some insights with TV Insider about what viewers can anticipate as the show approaches its conclusion. Melissa Navia, who portrays Erica Ortegas, described filming the fifth and final season as a “bittersweet” experience.

Celia Rose Gooding, who plays Nyota Uhura, feels like the show isn’t really over because there’s still so much more to come. She joked they’ll be discussing Strange New Worlds for years to come! Gooding described the cast and crew as a family with a lasting bond, and believes the show’s legacy will continue long after filming wraps – something you never truly have to say goodbye to.

Fans of Star Trek believe the end of Strange New Worlds might focus on the event that leaves Captain Pike with a disability. In a selfless act, Pike puts himself in harm’s way to rescue Starfleet cadets, resulting in serious injuries. Co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman has hinted at the show addressing Pike’s predetermined fate, explaining that they aim to let Anson Mount’s character enjoy the present, but as the moment of the accident nears, it will increasingly influence the storylines.

Goldsman believes, like anyone facing a difficult situation – and in a way, we all are – the character finds strength and continues on by maintaining strong relationships with those around him, including his team and the goals they’re working towards.

Even though Strange New Worlds has two more seasons coming, the show’s creators, Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, have been discussing what comes next for Star Trek. They’ve both expressed a strong desire to create a spin-off series based on Kirk’s initial year commanding the Enterprise.

Strange New Worlds Showrunners Tease Spinoff Series

When someone asked me about the possibility of a show called Star Trek: Year One happening, I was honest – I really don’t know! We’d absolutely love to do it, but ultimately, we don’t have the final say. Paramount+ owns the rights, and they’ve got new people in charge now, so it’s up to them. Honestly, we’re actually planning to wrap up our current Star Trek series after Season 5, completing what feels like a natural five-year arc. So, whether Year One happens depends on them, and if it does, that’d be fantastic!

Goldsman explained that they’ll continue working as long as opportunities arise, but if the project concludes, they want to be sure they’ve completed it to the best of their ability, finishing it smoothly and accurately.

Ethan Peck and Paul Wesley, stars of Strange New Worlds, are both interested in a spinoff series. Peck, who plays Spock, specifically mentioned a Year One spinoff would be “really wonderful.” He expressed his enthusiasm for continuing in the role as long as he’s asked, praising the show’s positive messages and the noble character of Spock, which he loves portraying.

Wesley expressed strong enthusiasm for a new Star Trek series focusing on Captain Kirk and the original crew of TOS, while also introducing characters like Chekov and Sulu who weren’t yet featured. He believes there’s a wealth of untapped stories within that era, offering opportunities to explore events between and even before the original episodes. As a lifelong fan, he’s eager to contribute to a series that delves into this rich period of Star Trek history.

You can watch the first three seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on Paramount+. There’s no news yet about when Season 4 will be released.
