Michael Shannon Responds To Man Of Steel’s Controversial Zod Death

Superhero movies remain incredibly popular, especially with the existence of interconnected cinematic universes like those from DC. Although DC’s James Gunn is building a brand new universe, fans are still discussing everything that happened in the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU), which is now available to stream on HBO Max. A particularly debated moment was Superman’s decision to kill Zod in the film Man of Steel, and now actor Michael Shannon is sharing his thoughts on the ongoing conversation about that scene.

Those who’ve followed the DC films closely will remember that discussions about Zod’s fate have continued ever since Man of Steel came out in 2013. Though Henry Cavill previously explained the decision, Michael Shannon recently shared his thoughts with Vanity Fair while reflecting on his career. He spoke about this plot twist, stating:

It really bothers me that people kill each other, no matter who they are – even if they’re aliens. A big point of discussion with this movie, which Zach Snyder intentionally created, is that Superman isn’t supposed to kill. So, I put him in a difficult position where he had to choose between saving others and killing me, and he did. That decision understandably caused a lot of controversy and debate.

The decision Superman made wasn’t about anger or a desire for control. After Zod caused widespread devastation in Metropolis, Superman was faced with a terrible choice: kill Zod or allow him to continue harming others. Henry Cavill’s character ultimately did what he felt he had to do to protect innocent lives, even though it deeply troubled him.

HBO Max offers streaming access to a vast library of movies, shows, documentaries, and the DC universe, including Man of Steel. Subscriptions start at $10.99 per month with ads.

Zack Snyder faced criticism for depicting Superman killing in Man of Steel, and this wasn’t the only instance. The decision to have Batman kill in Batman v Superman also drew negative reactions. Later, actor Michael Shannon spoke highly of Snyder, stating:

I truly enjoyed collaborating with Zack and being a part of this film. Some people assume he only took the project for the money, or that it’s different from his usual work. But I’m really proud of it – I believe it has genuine meaning and substance.

Zack Snyder had a distinct vision for his DC movies, and that included heroes sometimes breaking their usual moral codes. While some may disagree with his choices, he consistently showed heroes, who generally avoid killing, making that difficult decision when necessary. It’s interesting to note that after Superman killed Zod in Man of Steel, he didn’t kill anyone again in Batman v Superman or Justice League, suggesting that event may have been the turning point for his character’s stance on taking lives.

Zack Snyder initially envisioned a five-film arc for the DC Extended Universe, but those plans didn’t materialize. Following the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, fans launched a campaign using #RestoreTheSnyderVerse, hoping Warner Bros. would continue Snyder’s vision. However, with a new shared DC universe already in development, it seems unlikely that will happen.

The next DC film coming to cinemas is Supergirl, scheduled for release on June 26th, 2026. Meanwhile, Michael Shannon’s new series, Death By Lightning, is currently available to stream in full for Netflix subscribers.
