Sydney Sweeney reveals what ‘terrified’ her so much she had to get ‘drunk’ to deal with it

Sydney Sweeney shared details about a recent, unexpected skydiving adventure with Stephen Colbert, offering more information than he initially requested.

The 28-year-old actress revealed on The Late Show Thursday that she was extremely scared before going skydiving. To calm her nerves, she spent the entire night before drinking alcohol.

Sydney confessed that after drinking so much the night before, she was concerned she might get sick while skydiving.

Sydney spoke with Stephen after they both received ‘Men of the Year’ honors from GQ magazine. The conversation followed Sydney’s first public response to the backlash surrounding her controversial American Eagle jeans advertisement.

I couldn’t help but think about Stephen’s mention of a skydiving trip when I saw that picture of the Euphoria actress – she looked absolutely terrified while being secured to her instructor in mid-air! It really brought the story to life.

‘Why would you do this?’ he asked with concern. ‘Do you like heights?’

‘No, I’m scared of heights,’ Sydney responded, saying it was ‘terrifying.’

When the host pressed Sydney about why she went skydiving, she explained she was dedicating the year to experiencing new activities.

‘So I decided to jump out of a plane!’ she added with a shrug of her shoulders.

Stephen inquired about the necessary preparation for the dive, but Sydney surprisingly described a night out with her cousins. Instead of discussing training, she recounted how they visited a small town with a few bars and a church, and spent the night hopping between bars until 3 a.m.

‘And then I went skydiving at six,’ she added.

Colbert was shocked and asked if Sydney ‘show[ed] up still drunk.’

She jokingly admitted she was nervous about something going wrong during the performance, adding that if it did, she wouldn’t be the only one falling from above.

Even though Sydney worried she might get sick during the jump and potentially on her skydiving partners, she said the experience was actually really fun.

Oh my god, she described looking down and being completely mesmerized by all the fields – it was like a dream! And then she said she flew over a lake! It was so beautiful the way she told it, even though Stephen just didn’t get it. He didn’t seem to appreciate how magical it all was, but I did! It sounded absolutely incredible.

‘If you hit a lake at terminal velocity it still doesn’t go well,’ he joked.

During the interview, Sydney also discussed how she impressively persuaded her parents to support her decision to move to Hollywood and pursue an acting career.

She shared that she created a five-year business plan presentation at just ten years old. Even then, it was difficult to get people to agree with her ideas, and it took a long time – years, in fact – to finally convince them.

Stephen was curious to see the presentation young Sydney had created, but she explained that her mother had it and hadn’t had a chance to send it to her yet.

The comedian was surprised to learn that Sydney actually spends most of her time living in Idaho, where her family is from, instead of staying in Hollywood.

Sydney now lives in her great-grandparents’ old house, which is conveniently located next door to her grandmother and close to where her cousins used to live.

Shortly after she was born, her great-grandparents passed away, and the family home was sold, ending a long line of family residences in the neighborhood.

Family has always been everything to me. As a kid, our backyard was basically a highway to my cousins’ houses – we were always together! It’s funny, because a few years ago, I found myself walking up to that very same house – my great-grandmother’s house – and I knew I had to try and buy it. It felt like coming home, and reclaiming a piece of my history.

Colbert thought the neighbors might be upset she was trying to buy their property, but Sydney clarified that they were actually relieved to sell. They were also frustrated with Colbert and her cousins constantly running across their yards to visit each other.

She said her family was ‘always running amok,’ so she decided to name the home ‘Camp Run Amok.’
