After Studio Ghibli, Netflix revives the classic tale in Cosmic Princess Kaguya!

Coming to Netflix in 2026, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! reimagines a classic Japanese tale with a brand new story.

Studio Ghibli famously turned the traditional Japanese story, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (originally The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter), into a beloved animated movie in 2013. Now, thirteen years later, Netflix is creating a futuristic take on the same legend with Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, which will be the first full-length anime film directed by Seigo Yamashita.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya!

Netflix is creating a modern animated musical series called Cosmic Princess Kaguya, based on Japan’s oldest folktale. The show will update the classic story with contemporary animation and music, introducing it to a new audience.

The movie’s soundtrack, coming out on January 22, 2026, will include music from kz (livetune) and 40mP, as well as popular artists like ryo (supercell), yuigot, Aqu3ra, and HoneyWorks. Check out the trailer below!

Shingo Yamashita’s debut in Cosmic Princess Kaguya!

So, why all the excitement for Cosmic Princess Kaguya? It’s because this film is the first full-length anime directed by Shingo Yamashita.

Yamashita might not be a household name, but he’s a highly skilled animator who’s contributed to several popular anime series over the last ten years, including Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Naruto Shippuden, Soul Eater, Pokémon: Twilight Wings, Seitokai Yakuindomo, and Chainsaw Man. He’s not just any director; Yamashita is widely recognized as a leading and inventive figure in the animation world.

He directed the opening animation for the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen, which became incredibly popular and now has over 75 million views on YouTube, ranking it among the top 100 most-watched anime openings worldwide.

The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter

The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter is a famous old Japanese story, written around 900 years ago during the Heian period. The author is unknown. It’s about Kaguya-hime, a princess from the moon who was found as a baby inside a shining bamboo stalk.

As Kaguya-hime matures, her remarkable beauty attracts many potential husbands, even the Emperor of Japan, but she turns them all away by setting tasks no one can complete. Ultimately, she reveals she isn’t human, but a being from the moon, and returns to her home there.

Studio Ghibli adaptation

I was so excited when Studio Ghibli turned that beautiful story into the movie, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya back in 2013! It didn’t make a huge amount at the box office – around $700,000 – but it’s still one of the top 21 highest-grossing films the studio has ever made. Even though it wasn’t a massive blockbuster, Netflix clearly recognized how special it was, which is awesome!

The trailer for Cosmic Princess Kaguya is visually beautiful and features a fantastic soundtrack, suggesting the anime will be a truly engaging watch. We can’t wait to see the full story!
