HBO Max Orders Pilots For American Blue & How To Survive Without Me, Following The Pitt’s Success Model

HBO Max has commissioned two pilot episodes, and they’re hoping to replicate the success of their hit show, The Pitt. The Pitt, which premiered in January 2025, received excellent reviews and won several Emmy Awards, including one for its star, Noah Wyle, who plays Dr. Robby Robinavitch in the medical drama.

HBO Max has greenlit pilot episodes for two new series, according to Deadline. American Blue is a police drama from Jeremy Carver, known for his work on Supernatural. How to Survive Without Me is a family drama created by Greg Berlanti, Robbie Rogers, and Bash Doran.

Jan Carvey is not only directing the pilot episode of American Blue, but he’s also writing the script and serving as an executive producer. Brian Udovich is co-executive producing the show.

In the new series American Blue, Brian Milkovich, nicknamed ‘Milk,’ returns to his hometown in Illinois to help a struggling police department. As he does, he’s searching for a way to make amends, though the reasons why are still a mystery.

According to HBO Max executive Sarah Aubrey, the new series will be similar in style to classic police dramas like NYPD Blue and Hill Street Blues. She also mentioned that creators Carver and Udovich visited the Joliet, Illinois police department to gain insights and inspiration as they developed American Blue.

Berlanti, Rogers, and Doran penned the first episode of How to Survive Without Me, with Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman also serving as executive producers. The show centers on adult brothers and sisters navigating love and loss in Los Angeles.

According to HBO Max’s Aubrey, the streaming service was very enthusiastic about collaborating with Berlanti on How to Survive Without Me, particularly given his previous hits with family-focused shows such as Brothers and Sisters and Everwood.

Like How To Survive Without Me, the show Six Feet Under is serving as a key influence. The creator hopes audiences will feel drawn to the family and want to experience life alongside them.

Over his career, Greg Berlanti has created a huge number of television shows. Besides popular series like Brothers and Sisters and Everwood, he’s the developer behind The CW’s ‘Arrowverse,’ a connected universe featuring shows like Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Superman & Lois.

Although American Blue and How to Survive Without Me aren’t medical shows, people are comparing them to The Pitt because of their similar style and how much they cost to produce.

Although HBO is known for high-budget shows like Game of Thrones, the success of The Pitt proved to HBO that they could also create shows with longer seasons – 15 episodes or more – without spending a fortune, and still release new seasons annually.

Lately, it’s been happening more often that streaming shows take two or three years off between seasons, and when new seasons do arrive, they often have only a handful of episodes. This has led to a lot of disappointed fans voicing their frustration online, particularly with shows like Wednesday, House of the Dragon, and Stranger Things.

The Pitt demonstrated that a fresh approach to how TV shows are made and released can be successful even now, and American Blue and How to Survive Without Me are aiming to build on that achievement.

The Pitt season 2 premieres Thursday, January 8, 2026, on HBO Max.
