Courteney Cox and David Arquette prove they are friendly exes as actress casts his sister in new film

Courteney Cox and David Arquette maintain a good relationship despite their divorce, and Cox has now cast Arquette’s sister, Patricia Arquette, in her upcoming thriller, Evil Genius, which is based on a true crime story.

Lisa Kudrow, 61 and known for her role on Friends, is directing a new project. She recently wowed fans with her drumming skills. The project is based on the 2018 documentary series, Evil Genius, which told the story of a shocking bank heist.

Courteney was married to David, Patricia’s brother, for fourteen years, from 1999 to 2013.

Stranger Things star David Harbour has also been cast in the film, Deadline reported on Thursday. 

The film tells the story of the real-life ‘pizza bomber’ case. In 2003, Brian Wells, a pizza delivery driver, was forced to rob a bank in Pennsylvania with a bomb locked around his neck. Tragically, the bomb exploded, killing him immediately.

Courteney, also a producer on the film, has experience directing. She previously directed the film Just Before I Go in 2014 and several episodes of the TV show Cougar Town.

According to Deadline, ‘Evil Genius’ is a compelling story about betrayal, difficult circumstances, and how easily someone can become both the wronged and the wrongdoer.

The film will also star Michael Chernus, Garrett Dillahunt, Danielle Macdonald, Tom McCarthy, and Harlow Jane.

As someone who keeps a close eye on compelling stories, I was immediately hooked by the ‘Evil Genius’ documentary. Honestly, it’s one of those true crime tales that feels almost unbelievable – stranger than anything you’d find in a fictional thriller!

This story is both darkly humorous and profoundly moving. It explores themes of love, loneliness, and manipulation, focusing on how ordinary people can become caught up in extraordinary circumstances.

Production for the new true crime thriller is currently in full swing in the state of New Jersey.

However, a set release date for Evil Genius has yet to be announced.  

Critics generally liked the 2018 Netflix docuseries, giving it an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Courteney and Patricia’s brother, David, have collaborated on several projects in the past. However, ‘Evil Genius’ will mark the first time Courteney and Patricia have worked together.

Courteney and David met while filming Scream in 1996 and got married three years later, in 1999.

The couple had a daughter, Coco, who is now 21. They separated in 2010 and officially divorced three years later.

The actress began dating Johnny McDaid, a member of the band Snow Patrol, in late 2013, and they are still together.

Even though the couple broke up their engagement once before, they’ve continued dating.

David and Christina McLarty began dating in 2011 and got married in 2015. They have two children together, named Charlie and Augustus.

Even after their breakup, Courteney and David have continued to get along and work well together as parents.

The two actors have continued their collaboration, appearing together in Scream 5 (2022) and the forthcoming Scream 7, scheduled for release in 2026.

In 2020, the actor spoke with Entertainment Tonight about working with Courteney again after their divorce.

We share parenting responsibilities, so we communicate frequently. It’s a positive relationship, and we genuinely enjoy collaborating.

David also mentioned that working with her would be enjoyable because she’s a very talented actress, and he’s excited to revisit these characters and explore their current lives. He added that acting alongside her comes naturally.

In a 2023 interview on Sirius XM’s Andy Cohen Live, he also shared that it had been challenging to navigate Courteney’s continued fame from her role on Friends.

It’s tough sometimes, because I have pretty traditional ideas about what a man should do – like wanting to be the one who provides for others and pays for things.

He explained that being an actor often means experiencing unpredictable ups and downs – times when you’re in demand, and times when work is hard to find.

It’s strange when you try to measure up to someone who’s a huge television star. It’s difficult to imagine yourself achieving that level of success.

David told Cohen that despite the breakup, things had finished well. He felt that when relationships end with lawyers involved, people often end up fighting instead of reaching a peaceful resolution.

Often, couples end up arguing and spending a lot on legal fees when they could be finding ways to compromise and share things peacefully. I always advise people to genuinely make an effort to resolve their issues together.

He previously shared with Yahoo Entertainment how he and Courteney were raising their daughter, Coco.

It’s been a really emotional time for us, but we’ve been there for each other, offering a lot of support and being very open with our feelings.

David explained that he and his ex-wife never fought or competed with each other, either during their divorce or while raising their child. This has allowed them to build a friendship based on mutual respect.

Courteney Cox and David Arquette are returning for Scream 7, reprising their roles as Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley, respectively. The movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 27th of next year.
