Everyone is predicting a very successful opening weekend for Zootopia 2. The original Zootopia, released in 2016, earned over $1 billion worldwide and was a major win for Disney. It also received fantastic reviews, with a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and won numerous awards.
The sequel, Zootopia 2, will be released in theaters on November 26, the day before Thanksgiving.
Box office predictions are in for Zootopia 2, which comes out in just three weeks. The Hollywood Reporter estimates the movie will earn $125 million in the U.S. over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday. Ticket pre-sales are strong, matching those of Inside Out 2.
Compared to that, Zootopia earned $75.1 million when it first came out in March 2016. Zootopia 2 is releasing over Thanksgiving, which should give it an even stronger start at the box office.
The 2016 movie featured a fantastic cast including Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, and many other stars. Most of the original actors are back for the sequel, and they’ll be joined by new faces like Ke Huy Quan, Fortune Feimster, and Quinta Brunson.
The movie Zootopia follows Judy Hopps, a police officer, and Nick Wilde, a sly criminal, as they investigate why several predators have disappeared. A new film will bring them together again to confront a villain named Gary De’Snake, a dangerous pit viper.
As a huge animation fan, I was thrilled to hear that Shakira’s “Zoo” is going to be in Zootopia 2 – and it’s already getting recognized, with a nomination for Song – Animated Film at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards! Disney knows how to keep us excited, too. While we wait for the sequel, they released Zootopia+ on Disney+ back in 2022. It’s a series of six shorts that give us more of the characters we loved from the first Zootopia movie.
It’s been nine years since the first Zootopia movie was released, and Zootopia 2 is coming out just in time to potentially boost movie ticket sales in 2025. October was a particularly bad month for theaters, with box office numbers hitting a 30-year low (excluding the pandemic-affected October of 2020), and films like Tron: Ares not performing as well as expected.
November looks promising for movie studios, with the highly anticipated releases of Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2 predicted to be big hits. Other November releases include Predator: Badlands and Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. Then, in December, the popular Avatar franchise returns, likely boosting ticket sales again.
Zootopia 2 will be released in theaters on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
