Now streaming on Netflix, the critically acclaimed miniseries Death by Lightning tells the true story of President James Garfield (Michael Shannon) and his killer, Charles Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen). Critics have called the series “superb” and “gripping.”
The story alternates between two perspectives: it shows how James Garfield went from being an unknown figure to becoming president, and how Charles Guiteau became obsessed with him and ultimately decided to assassinate him.
The series tells the remarkable true story of James Garfield, a hesitant president at the turn of the 20th century, and Charles Guiteau, his devoted follower who ultimately assassinated him. It’s a stranger-than-fiction account of their relationship and the events leading to the president’s death.

Critics are already praising it, calling it both incredible and an extraordinary story.
Okay, so I just read a review on Heaven of Horror, and they said even though Michael Shannon is usually great, he gets outshined in this Netflix series. Apparently, Matthew Macfadyen totally kills it as Charles Guiteau in Death by Lightning. They described him as a really troubled guy who clearly needed help, but he just kept trying to tough it out.

I just read a review in TV Guide that really hit the nail on the head about the documentary Death by Lightning. They said it uses James Garfield’s surprising run for president as a way to look at the craziness and uncertainty of that time period – and surprisingly, it even feels relevant to what’s going on today! It’s like it shows how things can go wrong, and what opportunities get lost when things are chaotic.
Collider called the miniseries “gripping” and praised its “incredible ensemble cast,” describing it as “remarkably human.” They noted that while the humor sometimes felt unnecessary, it did contribute to a sense of realism within the story.
According to The Telegraph, this drama is excellent and fast-paced. Viewers will not only learn more about a little-known time in American politics, but also recognize the impressive skills of actor Macfadyen.
In a glowing review, The Guardian particularly praised Macfadyen’s portrayal of Guiteau. They highlighted a heartbreaking scene where Guiteau finally gets a meeting with Garfield, revealing a deeply empty interior despite his attempts to connect. The review called Macfadyen ‘brilliant’ in every moment of the character’s awfulness.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Macfadyen described the experience of filming ‘Death by Lightning’ as “surreal,” especially considering the 2024 attempt on the life of then-US president Donald Trump.
He explained the shooting happened right during filming over the summer, and he was very shaken to be working on a show that so accurately reflects current events.
The actor explained that the project feels surprisingly current, not like a typical historical drama. He agreed with Mike Shannon’s point that it avoids feeling ‘dusty’ and instead focuses on timeless human behavior, which can sometimes create a sense of urgency.
