Jason Statham returns to the big screen this week in Shelter, an action thriller where he plays a loner forced to face his troubled history. After saving a young girl from a dangerous storm, he must use his skills to keep her safe from those who want to harm her. The film is directed by Ric Roman Waugh.
Like many recent Jason Statham films such as The Beekeeper and A Working Man, Shelter seems to deliver exactly what fans want. Early reviews are in, and most agree it’s a non-stop action movie – Deadline called it “relentless” – and it currently has a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. We’re not disappointed!
The film Shelter features Daniel Mays, Bill Nighy, Naomi Ackie, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach, who you might recognize from Hamnet. If you’re still on the fence about seeing it, here’s a collection of the first reviews.
What to Read Next
The Hollywood Reporter
Shelter delivers the exciting action Jason Statham’s fans expect, along with his signature cool and understated performance style – a style so subtle it makes even Charles Bronson seem expressive by comparison.
The Arts Desk
Despite following a familiar action movie formula and being very much in the style of Jason Statham, Shelter is a fast-paced and exciting thriller. Director Ric Roman Waugh keeps things simple and efficient.

HeyUGuys
If you’re a fan of Jason Statham and want another fast-paced action movie, Shelter will satisfy you. Just don’t expect anything groundbreaking or original.
Deadline
If Jason Statham’s in a movie with a one-word title, you pretty much know what to expect, and his new film, Shelter, delivers exactly that.
Collider
Waugh and Statham consistently deliver what their fans expect: thrilling action, plenty of gunfire, witty dialogue, and a compelling, enigmatic hero. Their new film, Shelter, fits that bill perfectly.

Next Best Picture
Not every movie in this genre needs to be a masterpiece, but this one could have been much more engaging if it had been made with a little more creativity and effort.
Little White Lies
Jason Statham’s physical presence isn’t enough to save a movie that relies too heavily on predictable plot points and a script filled with clichés.
Shelter is released in cinemas on 30 January.
I’m so excited! The latest issue of Living Legends, a gorgeous, full-color magazine all about Taylor Swift, just came out! It’s 100 pages long and you can grab a copy at any newsagent or online for only £8.99. Definitely picking one up!
