Matt Smith Reveals When He Begins Star Wars: Starfighter Filming

Matt Smith has revealed when he’s starting to film his role in the new Star Wars movie, Starfighter. The film, directed by Shawn Levy, is scheduled to come out in theaters on May 28, 2027. The cast also features Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

On August 28th, Lucasfilm announced that filming for the new movie had begun in the U.K. They also shared the cast list and a black-and-white photo of Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas on set. The film will be a separate story taking place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, but specific details about the plot and characters haven’t been released yet.

Paul Smith recently told actress Genevieve Gaunt (as reported by A Rabbit’s Foot) that he’ll start filming Starfighter in December. He’s also been working on designing his character’s complete appearance, including the costume. You can find his thoughts on the process below.

I’m currently figuring things out for a new project. It’s similar to choosing a costume – you often need to live with something for a while to really know if it’s right.

I’m about to do Star Wars in December, and we’re sort of trying to develop the look for that.

Initially, reports said Will Smith would play a villain in Starfighter, and it was also believed that Goth was cast as a villain. However, since Smith didn’t start filming until December – while the Star Wars movie has been in production since August – his role might be smaller than first thought.

Like all great Star Wars villains, the costumes and overall look are really important. Before filming starts, the team is carefully finishing the designs. So far, we’ve only seen set photos of Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans’ characters, including a picture of them on a ship that was released a few weeks after an initial black-and-white photo. We haven’t gotten a first look at Will Smith, Thomasin McKenzie, or any of the other actors yet.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Matt Smith as a Star Wars villain. There were strong rumors he’d play a younger version of Sheev Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker. Some fans theorized this younger Palpatine would have appeared by taking the Force energy from the connection between Rey and Ben Solo.

I was surprised to hear that John Boyega wasn’t in the final Rise of Skywalker, but it’s fantastic news he’s officially joining the Star Wars universe now! It’s amazing to see him move between these huge franchises – after Doctor Who and House of the Dragon, Star Wars is another incredible addition to his work.

The next Star Wars movie, titled The Mandalorian & Grogu, will be released in theaters on May 22, 2026. This is the first Star Wars film since The Rise of Skywalker came out in 2019. The movie will follow characters from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, making it a familiar story. In contrast, details about Star Wars: Starfighter remain largely unknown, even though filming has been underway for months.
