Actor Lewis Tan is promising some shocking deaths in the new Mortal Kombat movie, hinting that beloved characters might not survive. This film is a continuation of the 2021 reboot and introduces several new fighters as Earthrealm faces a devastating threat from Shao Kahn (played by Martyn Ford).
Lewis Tan, reprising his role as Cole Young, recently told ComicBook.com that the upcoming battle for Earthrealm in Mortal Kombat 2 will feature some truly shocking and violent deaths. He says that any character could die, and he anticipates some viewers might be disturbed by the level of brutality. Here’s what he had to say:
Honestly, as a movie fan, I think the filmmakers were really playing with our emotions. They went back and forth on who lived and died so many times during writing! At first, I was shocked by some of the potential deaths they considered. But they kept changing things around, and by the end, it felt like absolutely anyone could go. There are a lot of deaths in the second movie, that’s for sure. And the thing is, even if a character you love doesn’t make it, it’s not necessarily a full stop for them. Death isn’t the end of their story, apparently. So, brace yourself – there are casualties, and some people will be thrilled while others will be furious!
Beyond the dangerous and deadly fights, Tan hints at a large-scale action scene set in a memorable location from the game, which he’s really excited about. While he’s keeping specifics under wraps, he did mention that the fight will feature some impressive and unique moves.
I had a really intense fight scene in Mortal Kombat II. I can’t reveal who I was fighting, but once you see it, you’ll understand why it’s so memorable. The fight took place in one of my favorite video game environments, and I was thrilled to film there because of its fantastic design. It was a lengthy shoot, taking around three weeks to complete.
As a movie fan, I can tell you the fight scenes in this one are really something else. They’ve got a totally different style than the first film – you’re going to see moves and special abilities we didn’t get to see before. Remember how Cole was just figuring out his powers at the end of the first movie? Well, this is where he really starts using them, and it looks awesome. Honestly, it’s a fight that fans absolutely love, and it took us a full three weeks to shoot!
Okay, so the next Mortal Kombat movie is definitely happening, and there’s a lot of buzz around it. The first one from 2021 got a bit of a mixed reaction from critics, but fans actually really liked it, which is awesome. Because of that positive response, Warner Bros. seems really confident and has actually moved the release date forward – it’s now coming out in May 2026 instead of October 2025. That’s a good sign, right?
Tan’s comments hint that the next Mortal Kombat movie will be even more violent and have more deaths than the first one. With several returning and new characters – including Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, who’s been heavily featured in promotional materials – it’s likely we’ll see some major characters at risk.
The cast of Mortal Kombat 2 includes Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, and Mehcad Brooks as Jax, as well as other talented actors.
As one commenter pointed out, the brutal deaths shown in Mortal Kombat 2 aren’t permanent. The series is known for characters who die violently but then come back – either in a different form or from another dimension. We’ve already seen this with Kano, who appeared to die in the 2021 movie but will be back for the sequel, and Sub-Zero, who is returning as Noob Saibot.
Okay, so nobody knows who is going to bite the dust in Mortal Kombat 2, but trust me, when they go, it’s going to be seriously over-the-top. But here’s the interesting part: if they make a third movie, it sounds like even characters who die might find a way to come back. As a long-time fan, I’m both excited and a little skeptical, but hey, it is Mortal Kombat!
