Daniel Craig Explains What It’s Like Dressing As A Stormtrooper, And It Sounds Anything But ‘Great’

Daniel Craig is well-known for wearing suits, having played James Bond for fifteen years in five films. However, he recently discovered a new appreciation for comfort thanks to a very different outfit: a Stormtrooper costume. While his appearance as a Stormtrooper in Star Wars: The Force Awakens seemed cool, the actor has said the experience wasn’t actually that comfortable to film in.

Craig recently appeared on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy with director Rian Johnson to discuss their new movie, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. Host Andy Cohen then asked about Craig’s famous, uncredited role in Star Wars, and what it was like to wear a Stormtrooper costume. Craig was happy to share his experience, saying:

Stunt performers often wear this while working in the desert, and it tends to get quite smelly. My version had overly long sleeves that actually made my thumb numb for about a week. Aside from those issues, it was a good piece of equipment.

Despite Craig’s dry humor and sarcasm, it was clear the costume was just awful. Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi, added his thoughts, confirming how unpleasant being a Stormtrooper cosplayer actually is.

Everyone wants to be a Stormtrooper until they put on that uniform. It’s not comfortable.

The Knives Out actor also explained how his surprise appearance happened almost by chance and without much attention. He shared the story of how it all came about:

We kept it a secret and just went ahead with it. I was getting ready for a James Bond film – I’m not sure which one – and J.J. Abrams was directing. I knew one of the assistant directors, and when I found out they were filming, I asked if there was a possibility I could be involved. They said yes, so I did a quick morning shoot.

When the host asked if he’d enjoyed the experience, Craig chuckled again. With a straight face, he replied:

No… [laughing] No, it was great.

Let me tell you, one of the coolest little details in The Force Awakens was a surprise cameo by Daniel Craig. He wasn’t listed in the credits, and you only see him in a Stormtrooper helmet, but fans quickly figured out it was him – it’s his voice! It’s during one of Rey’s best scenes, when she uses the Force to trick the trooper. That moment really took off online, becoming a hugely popular Star Wars trivia tidbit, and honestly, it’s just a fun little piece of filmmaking that I really appreciated.

Daniel Craig is trading in his role in Star Wars for a return to the world of detective Benoit Blanc. He’ll be starring in the third Knives Out movie, scheduled for release in 2025. This installment promises a more intense mystery, but also a return to the classic “whodunit” style that many mystery fans enjoy. Director Rian Johnson says the new film will be structured more like a traditional Agatha Christie novel.

Daniel Craig stars alongside Josh O’Connor, who takes on the lead role, similar to how Ana de Armas did in Knives Out. While Glass Onion was a complex and showy take on the mystery genre, Wake Up Dead Man appears to be a more straightforward challenge – asking audiences, and detective Benoit Blanc, to solve the puzzle using only the evidence presented. Early previews are creating excitement, and Craig seems to be delivering one of his strongest performances to date.

The new movie Wake Up Dead Man will be in theaters starting November 26, 2025, and will be available to stream on Netflix starting December 12, 2025. It’s the next installment in the Knives Out series, so all you need is a Netflix subscription to watch it.
