Riley Keough believes she’s experienced spiritual connections with her late mother, Lisa Marie Presley, which have provided her with comfort during a difficult time filled with both grief and family issues.
Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, unexpectedly passed away in January 2023 at the age of 54. Her death was caused by a blockage in her small intestine, a complication following weight-loss surgery.
She is survived by her three children: Riley, 36, from her marriage to Danny Keough, and 17-year-old twins Harper and Finley from her marriage to Michael Lockwood. She also leaves behind the memory of her son Benjamin, who tragically passed away in 2020 at the age of 27.
After Lisa Marie Presley’s death, a contentious legal fight began between her daughter Riley and grandmother Priscilla over who would manage her inheritance.
Let me tell you, dealing with fallout from past disagreements can be surprisingly tricky. While Priscilla managed to resolve one issue, she’s now facing a really difficult financial battle with some former advisors. It’s gotten quite heated, and unfortunately, there’s a very upsetting claim that she ended support for her daughter too soon. It’s a tough situation, and a reminder that even after resolving one conflict, new ones can arise, sometimes with deeply personal accusations.
With the release of her memoir, From Here to the Great Unknown, Riley says she feels her mother’s influence and support.

She told People magazine on Tuesday that if you’re receptive to them, opportunities are all around us, and she truly believes that’s the case.
I definitely feel a connection to something beyond our everyday world. There are times when things happen that are just too strange to be coincidence, you know?
Riley didn’t share details about those unsettling experiences, but she says she’ll discuss them in a new, personal afterword added to the updated edition of her memoir, which will be released on November 11th.
Riley has experienced this feeling of connection before – she once said she knew about her mother’s passing before anyone told her.
I just had a gut feeling, I can’t really explain it,” Riley Keough, star of ‘Daisy Jones & The Six,’ shared with Drew Barrymore in October 2024. “There had been health scares before, but this time felt different.”
You know, in that moment, I just let go. It wasn’t a big, dramatic thing, but I had this quiet feeling of… acceptance, almost like everything was as it should be. It was subtle, but definitely there.
While the autopsy showed Lisa Marie Presley died from a blockage in her small intestine, a complication of weight-loss surgery, her daughter, Riley Keough, has stated she believes her mother actually died of a broken heart.
In 2024, Keough shared with People magazine that her mother’s death was likely caused by a broken heart, following the suicide of her brother, Benjamin.

Keough shared that after Ben’s death, her mother did everything she could to be strong for her and her younger sisters, but they could all see how much she was hurting.
She explained that while her mother’s body failed after surgery, everyone in the family believed she had actually died from heartbreak.
As a longtime fan, it broke my heart when Lisa Marie shared in 2022 that she’d never truly get over losing her son. It was comforting to learn, through Riley’s recent memoir, that Lisa Marie and she began to heal, not by forgetting, but by dedicating themselves to helping others. It felt like a beautiful way to honor his memory and find some peace.
In her memoir, Lisa Marie shared a particularly moving message she received: a young person wrote to Riley, explaining they hadn’t attempted suicide the night before because of something Riley said about the impact it would have on their loved ones. They ended the message with a thank you, and Lisa Marie said it deeply affected her and lifted her spirits.
Honestly, I’ve been obsessed with Nick Cave for years, and seeing ‘One More Time With Feeling’ back in 2016… it just wrecked me, in the best way possible. It was such a beautiful and raw look at his grief, it really helped me understand everything he was going through, and it’s stuck with me ever since. It’s just… beautiful, truly.
Benjamin died in July 2020, following an argument with his girlfriend at the family’s mansion.
An autopsy later revealed he had both cocaine and alcohol in his system.
Benjamin had been dealing with mental health issues for a long time. He’d previously tried to end his life about six months before he passed away, and had been to rehab several times, most recently for three weeks just four months prior.
