The Lowdown Season 2: Creator Sterlin Harjo Addresses Renewal

Sterlin Harjo, the creator of the show The Lowdown, recently shared what viewers can expect in season 2. Starring Ethan Hawke—a four-time Oscar nominee—The Lowdown premieres on FX in September and will also be available to stream on Hulu. Hawke plays Lee Raybon, a man who calls himself a ‘truthstorian’ and dedicates his time to uncovering corruption in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which quickly makes him a target for influential and dangerous individuals.

Following the success of her Emmy-nominated series Reservation Dogs on FX, Harjo’s new show, The Lowdown, is earning rave reviews. Currently, it has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 44 positive reviews and just one slightly negative one, leading many to wonder if the Oklahoma-based crime drama will be renewed for another season.

After the first season of The Lowdown ended, creator and executive producer Harjo spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s future. While FX hasn’t officially renewed the series yet, Harjo shared that he’s already considered multiple seasons and hinted at focusing on some of the popular supporting characters. As a big fan, I’ve been brainstorming about where this show could go for seasons to come. I’ve definitely been thinking about expanding on the Oklahoma storyline and really diving into Lee’s connections from season one. You also pay attention to how fans react – everyone loves Waylon, so I’m curious to see what they could do with his character! And Killer Mike as Cyrus? He’s incredible, so exploring that further is a must. I’ve got a bunch of ideas, actually. I was just saying to someone that The Rockford Files managed to do a ‘case of the week’ format every episode, and we could totally do something similar with each season!

Season 2 of The Lowdown boasts an impressive cast including Keith David, Kaniehtiio Horn, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Macon Blair, Scott Shepherd, Tim Blake Nelson, Tracy Letts, Michael Hitchcock, Killer Mike, and Peter Dinklage. Plus, a character from the show Reservation Dogs makes a surprise appearance, offering lots of potential for new storylines and adventures.

It’s easy to imagine Hawke’s main character finding himself in another thrilling case. The first episode quickly sets up the story, explaining what’s at stake for him both personally and professionally, and then introduces several returning characters for him to interact with. According to Harjo, the story naturally allows for further adventures.

Besides the show’s cancellation, it’s unclear why FX wouldn’t continue a series many critics considered one of the best on television. For years, that title belonged to Reservation Dogs.

I was completely captivated by that show – it was funny on the surface, but surprisingly touching as it followed these characters growing up. It didn’t get much attention at first, but near the end, it finally got the recognition it deserved with some Emmy nominations, even for Outstanding Comedy Series! Plus, it launched D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai into the spotlight. Seeing all that, I really think this new series, The Lowdown, has the potential to follow a similar path to success if it gets another season.
