Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s The Mummy return is huge – but it’s not the only exciting thing

It’s frustrating how Hollywood often relies on old ideas, constantly rebooting or continuing existing franchises. However, a return to ‘The Mummy’ from the 90s – and seeing Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz together again – is a welcome exception.

Sources say the popular pair are returning for another film in the series, likely playing their famous characters, Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan. It would be strange if they didn’t!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming film will probably be a sequel that disregards The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor – the film where Maria Bello replaced Rachel Weisz as Evelyn. Most fans will likely agree with this choice.

What to Read Next

Seeing Fraser and Weisz back together is thrilling, particularly since it felt like a dream for fans. However, it’s understandable if you’re not sure the new movie can match the quality of the original two.

There’s one more important detail about the upcoming announcement that should reassure you the next Mummy movie will be good.

Stephen Sommers, the creator of the first two films, isn’t directing the new movie. Instead, Universal has hired Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as the directing duo Radio Silence. While they’re not household names outside of horror, they have a track record of successfully bringing classic franchises back to life.

Radio Silence, the team behind the well-received 2022 Scream—a film that successfully balanced nostalgia with a new approach—is taking on The Mummy. They proved they could work with established actors like Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox while still honoring the original characters, which will be key for this new project. However, fans will be upset if Rick O’Connell meets a fate similar to Dewey Riley’s!

The success of Scream (2022) led to Scream VI, proving that Radio Silence isn’t limited to just one successful formula or franchise. They’ve also demonstrated their talent with original horror films like Ready or Not and last year’s Abigail, both of which skillfully blended humor and scares. This balance makes them well-suited to direct The Mummy, though they’ll likely need to tone down the gore compared to their previous work.

It doesn’t look like Guy Busick, a frequent writer for Radio Silence (known for his work on Scream, Ready or Not, and Abigail), will be involved unless the script is changed. However, the producers from Project X Entertainment are joining the team, bringing back most of the key people who made those earlier films successful.

The new movie’s script is written by David Coggeshall. While some of his previous work, like The Family Plan and Netflix’s The Deliverance, has been uneven, he had a big success with Orphan: First Kill. That prequel cleverly surprised audiences, so we’re hoping he can bring that same skill to this project.

One last thing could make the next Mummy movie the best legacy sequel of all time. While no other actors have been confirmed yet, it wouldn’t feel right without John Hannah returning as Evelyn’s brother, Jonathan. The chemistry between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz was key to the success of the first two films, but it was Hannah’s comedic talent that really made the trio work so well together.

Ideally, Oded Fehr, Arnold Vosloo, and Patricia Velásquez would reprise their roles as Ardeth Bay, Imhotep, and Anck-su-namun, but we can worry about that later. With Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning and Radio Silence directing, there’s a lot of potential for a stylish and successful revival of The Mummy.
