Man, I’m seriously counting down the days until the last season of Stranger Things hits Netflix. But honestly, I’m a little scared too! It being the final season means someone we love is probably going to die, and I’m not ready for that!
With the Duffer Brothers hinting at a dramatic and intense final episode, many viewers believe they’ve figured out which characters won’t survive.
Let’s put a popular theory to rest: we’re definitely not suggesting Steve Harrington is anyone’s favourite. We’ve seen that idea floating around, and it’s just not happening.
What to Read Next
Although Steve’s character development suggests he might bravely sacrifice himself to save everyone, his death would be deeply upsetting.
The upcoming season of Stranger Things is causing some viewers to speculate about which characters might die, and the possibilities are proving a bit unsettling for some.
Who will die in Stranger Things season five?

Based on the season-five trailer, it looks like Steve might not be as prominent in the new season.
The creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, have confirmed the teaser trailer includes clips from all eight episodes. While a carefully crafted edit might suggest Joe Keery’s character is in trouble, many viewers believe this is a deliberate attempt to mislead them.
Fans of Stranger Things are dealing with the anticipation and sadness about the upcoming fifth and final season by playfully predicting which characters won’t survive.
Certain characters keep showing up, leading some viewers to believe the younger group will be okay, but the adults are in real danger.
Okay, so everyone’s been talking online about who might not make it out of the next season of the show. A lot of fans think Mike’s parents, Karen and Ted Wheeler, could be in danger, along with other characters who aren’t the main crew, like Murray. It’s kinda heartbreaking to think about, but people are seriously worried these supporting characters might become casualties.
One fan predicted that the show won’t kill off any of the core characters who’ve been around for the past five seasons. They think Karen, Ted (though killing both would be shocking!), Murray, and a few of the newer, less central characters might be at risk.
One person commented that they believe both of Wheeler’s parents will likely be seriously hurt. Another person predicted Ted will be the one to suffer consequences, not Karen.
Researchers observed that Karen was more likely to use screen time to comfort her children after their father died than to be comforted by them through screens.
A fan requested a dramatic and impactful death for Murray, the conspiracy theorist character played by Brett Gelman in Stranger Things.
Someone suggested a dramatic and heroic death for Murray: he’d lock himself in a room with all the Demodogs and demibats and then sacrifice himself by setting everything ablaze.
I saw someone predict Eleven, Millie Bobby Brown’s character, is going to have a really rough time again. They don’t think she’ll die exactly, but they believe she’s getting pulled back into the Upside Down. They weren’t sure if she’d come out of that okay, though – it doesn’t sound good!
One popular theory suggests Eleven didn’t actually die at the end of the first season, and that her ‘death’ was staged.
You know, I’ve got a feeling they’re going to throw us a curveball with Eleven. I’m predicting a fake-out death – like they’ll make us think she’s gone, but she’ll actually be okay!
It’s not a surprising idea, considering the direction the show seems to be taking with Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) after the fourth season.
Despite this, a cliffhanger ending between the first part, released November 26th, and the upcoming Christmas/New Year episodes could still surprise audiences.
Will Stranger Things pull an “Eddie Munson” with new character Derek?

Since fans are still grieving Eddie’s death, Stranger Things might repeat a similar storyline with a new character to evoke the same emotional response.
Eddie Munson, the metalhead and Dungeon Master who first appeared in the fourth season, was a surprisingly divisive character at first. However, he quickly became a fan favorite, especially after developing a heartwarming friendship with Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo). Sadly, his story ended tragically when he was killed by a dangerous attack of Demobats.
Even though fans are still hoping to see Eddie in flashback scenes during season five, the show might explore a similar storyline for Derek Turnbow, played by Jake Connelly.
Derek is initially portrayed as a bully, and he might face danger, particularly if he changes his ways and allies with the main group to battle Vecna.
One fan predicted the new character will quickly become a fan favorite, only to meet an untimely end, similar to beloved characters like Bob, Alexei, and Eddie. Another user bluntly stated they don’t think the character Derek will survive the season.
So, will Steve die in Stranger Things season five?

You know, Steve is one of those characters who really grew on me. He started as this annoying guy Nancy liked, but he totally turned into the older brother figure for Dustin and the rest of us kids. Plus, his friendship with Robin is awesome – they’re best buds, and he really looks out for everyone.
While his death would be a huge loss, some fans think he’ll survive and that a different character linked to Nancy is the one in danger.
Honestly, it makes sense to be worried about Steve, but I’m starting to think it’s all a distraction. It feels a little too obvious, you know? And it’s led me to believe that Jonathan is in real danger – I really think something bad is going to happen to him.
“I’m leaning HEAVILY towards Jonathan,” someone else agreed.
The trailer seems to highlight both him and Nancy quite a bit, and that’s definitely noticeable. While it doesn’t guarantee anything, it’s interesting and might hint at something important. Often, shows will give characters a lot of attention before they’re killed off, to make the impact on the audience stronger.
What will happen to Vecna in Stranger Things?

The big baddie played by Jamie Campbell Bower won’t survive season five, fans agreed.
It feels like a safe assumption that the main villain won’t be allowed to continue causing trouble in Hawkins, but some viewers are hoping for a surprisingly cheerful conclusion to Stranger Things.
Someone jokingly wrote “everyone lives, Vecna dies,” suggesting the show’s finale, releasing on New Year’s Eve, might mean the Duffer Brothers aren’t planning a tragic ending after all.
“There will be no sad start of the new year,” they added.
Why Stranger Things season five is going to be “brutal”

Known for protecting its main characters, Stranger Things often chooses to eliminate beloved supporting characters—like Barb, Bob, Alexei, Billy, and Eddie—instead.
While we don’t want to see major characters die, raising the stakes with a more intense and dramatic storyline would create a truly epic final season.
The creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, have said that the fifth season will be intense and difficult to watch, but they promise it won’t rely on cheap scares.
“It’s a brutal season, I will say that,” Ross told Entertainment Weekly last week.
Matt described the show as intense and violent, with incredibly high stakes. He explained that because the story is reaching its climax, there’s a lot at risk. He hopes the events are both surprising and feel justified, emphasizing that they weren’t aiming for cheap shock.
The creators of the show are being extra cautious about killing off characters, knowing this is the last season and there won’t be time for viewers to process a major loss in the finale.
Although this suggests a character might die around the middle of the season, the creators, the Duffer brothers, wouldn’t confirm anything, saying they wanted to make sure the story felt true to their characters.
Since there won’t be a sixth season, any character deaths need to feel meaningful and fit with the overall story arc we’ve planned for the finale. That was a major focus of our conversations this year.
You can watch seasons 1 through 4 of Stranger Things on Netflix now. The fifth and final season will arrive in two parts: the first four episodes premiere on November 26th, followed by three more on Christmas Day. The very last episodes will be available on December 31st.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can purchase Ariana & Witches at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
