Stephen King has hinted at the upcoming appearance of Pennywise in IT: Welcome to Derry. This TV series is a prequel, meaning it’s set before the story told in his original novel and the films based on it. So far, two episodes have aired, and new ones are released every Sunday at 9pm EST on HBO.
While the iconic Pennywise hasn’t shown up much yet, the first two episodes of the series have still been quite frightening. So far, the show has been introducing its new main characters: Lilly (played by Clara Stack), Marge (Matilda Lawler), Teddy (Mikkal Karim Fidler), and Ronnie (Amanda Christine).
Stephen King recently spoke with the New York Post about his expectations for Pennywise in IT: Welcome to Derry. He promised the character will be just as frightening as ever when he appears, and praised the show as a whole. Here’s what he had to say:
When Pennywise finally appears, he’s still scary as hell.
I really enjoyed ‘Welcome to Derry’. It’s full of frightening moments and strange, dreamlike imagery. One scene, in particular – a scary incident at a supermarket involving pickle jars – has stayed with me.
Even though only two episodes of Welcome to Derry have aired, the core of the town’s horror remains a mystery. The show has already presented disturbing real-life issues—like racism, difficult childbirth, and loss—alongside frightening visuals, but Pennywise, the terrifying clown, hasn’t fully appeared yet.
As King points out, the show now focuses on visually representing what each main character fears. For example, in episode 2, a simple trip to the grocery store turns terrifying for Lilly when she begins seeing bodies preserved in pickle jars.
This episode features a disturbing and frightening sequence for Ronnie, where she vividly imagines a traumatic, birth-like experience involving a monstrous version of her mother. While the scene is graphic and contributes to the show’s overall horror, it unfortunately doesn’t reveal much about the primary villain fans are waiting to see.
Bill Skarsgård will return as Pennywise in the upcoming series, IT: Welcome to Derry, marking his first time playing the character since IT: Chapter Two. Fans of the IT franchise, who praised Skarsgård’s performance in the films, are particularly excited to see him reprise the role and are eagerly anticipating his appearance in the show. This return is building a lot of excitement for the iconic villain.
Stephen King’s commentary makes Pennywise seem important to the series, but it hasn’t shown us when or how the creepy clown will appear. So far, in the first two episodes, there haven’t even been any glimpses of Pennywise, so fans might have to wait a little longer for the Pennywise content they’re expecting from IT: Welcome to Derry.
