Grammy Awards finally give metal band a seat at the little kids’ table

The Grammy Awards tend to avoid showcasing hard rock, heavy metal, and especially punk music. It seems these genres are considered too edgy for the globally televised ceremony, which prefers more mainstream and safer options.

It’s good to see the Grammys including a metal band – Spiritbox – in the 2026 show, even if their performance will be relegated to a less prominent spot, like a pre-show event.

Rather than appearing on the main Grammy Awards broadcast on CBS and Paramount+ starting at 8 pm ET on February 1st, Spiritbox will perform during the Premiere Ceremony, alongside a few other artists.

Spritibox will perform at the 2026 Grammy Awards (sort of)

Before the official awards ceremony, there will be a separate performance event available to stream online. YouTube will broadcast these performances, potentially reaching more viewers than Paramount+. However, this wasn’t likely the Grammy Awards’ original plan.

The Grammys seem to prioritize pop music and profit over recognizing hard rock. That’s why only a couple of hard rock bands – like Metallica and AC/DC – have ever been featured in the show’s history. It’s clear the decision-makers aren’t really considering the desires of hard rock fans.

It’s great that Spiritbox was involved, and hopefully we’ll see more of that in the future. It’s puzzling why heavier rock bands aren’t more represented, considering rock music is really what keeps the Grammys relevant today. Rock is dominant musically, but unfortunately doesn’t generate sales figures like pop music does.

Besides Spiritbox, Darren Criss and Helen J Shen, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, and Zara Larsson will also perform at the Premiere Ceremony. This ceremony, which includes the award for Best Metal Performance – where Spiritbox is a nominee – will be held at the Peacock Theater, just next to the Crypto.com Arena, not inside it.

Look, Spiritbox getting a Grammy nod doesn’t exactly feel like the Grammys are suddenly embracing heavy music, but hey, it’s something, right? It’s like they’re throwing metal fans a few scraps when we deserve the whole feast, honestly.

Besides Spiritbox, Dream Theater, Ghost, Sleep Token, and Turnstile are also nominated for Best Metal Performance. Each of these bands deserves to win and perform on the Grammy Awards broadcast.
