James Van Der Beek spent Halloween with his family and posted a heartwarming photo of them all enjoying the spooky season.
The 48-year-old former Dawson’s Creek star is currently battling stage 3 colorectal cancer.
Okay, so for Halloween, my husband went all out as the Phantom of the Opera – seriously, a fantastic costume! And his wife, Kimberly, was adorable as a little mouse, completely decked out in spiderwebs. It was a really creative couples’ look, and they totally nailed it!
The photo included the couple with their six kids: daughters Olivia (15), Annabel (11), Emilia (9), and Gwendolyn (6), and sons Joshua (13) and Jeremiah (4).
Kimberly shared a family Halloween photo with the caption ‘Happy Halloween!!!!’ Her kids were dressed up as a fox, the Statue of Liberty, and other spooky characters.
James revealed his diagnosis in November 2024.
Fans recently became worried about his health after he appeared much thinner during a virtual reunion of the TV show Dawson’s Creek.
He was initially due to appear in person but had to cancel due to ill health.
Back in November 2024, Van Der Beek spoke about his diagnosis and said he was feeling good.
‘Miracles do happen, and they happen all the time,’ he told People at the time.
‘It’s scary at the onset. It’s overwhelming. Go easy on yourself. You got this.’
He shared how grateful he is for his wife and children, saying he feels lucky to have so much to look forward to and that life is good.
The stars of Dawson’s Creek got back together at the Richard Rogers Theatre in New York City to perform a live reading of the first episode of their show, benefiting the charity F Cancer.
Unfortunately, the event’s lead actor, James, had to cancel his appearance because he became unwell while receiving treatment for colorectal cancer.
Instead of appearing alone, James was surprised on stage by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children. He had filmed videos beforehand to be shown during the performance.
Kimberly posted photos with Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, and Busy Philipps, her husband’s coworkers, and expressed her gratitude for their support. She also mentioned how much she missed her husband.
‘But the support and the love has been healing to the core.’
Katie, who played James’ on-screen girlfriend Joey Potter, also reminisced about that night, sharing how much she cherished her connection with her fellow actors.
The actress shared a video of herself with Michelle and Joshua Jackson, writing that she could never fully express how much they mean to her and how deeply connected they are through everything they’ve experienced together.
To James, Josh, and Michelle… I love you all, dating back to April 1997. James, we believe in you and are here for you. We’re so grateful to everyone who has supported James and his family, both from the start and continuing now. And thank you for all the support last night.
James replied to the post, commenting: ‘Love you! Thank you for being you.’
Lin-Manuel Miranda, known for Hamilton, stepped in at the last minute to read through the script. This happened after a request from his friends, Michelle and her husband Thomas Kail.
The celebrated Broadway star posted his own pictures from the event, showing him posing with James’s family. He expressed how honored he was to be there and shared that he’d been sending James photos throughout rehearsals and the performance itself.
Lin-Manuel explained that James unfortunately couldn’t come to New York for the Dawson’s Creek reunion on Monday because he was sick with a virus. Thomas Kail let him know over the weekend.
Since I’m now a godfather to Tommy and Michelle’s child, covering for Dawson on short notice is just part of what I normally do.
What happened next felt surreal, like something out of the TV show Quantum Leap. I was incredibly honored to step in as an understudy, helping to share the love for James, his family, and the amazing cast and show with audiences at the Rodgers and around the world.
