Jesse Eisenberg Shares Crushing Update on ‘Zombieland’ Franchise’s Future

Ever since the popular horror comedy Zombieland: Double Tap came out in 2019, fans have been eagerly awaiting a third movie. The sequel did well both with audiences and critics, earning over $125 million worldwide and a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which made another installment seem likely. However, the series has been quiet for several years. Recently, Jesse Eisenberg, who plays the main character Columbus, shared an update about the possibility of a third film.

Jesse Eisenberg recently discussed the possibility of a Zombieland 3 with ComicBook.com, but his response wasn’t very encouraging for fans. While he hasn’t ruled out returning to the series completely, he suggested it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon, as he’s currently focused on other projects. He just finished working on Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, a sequel to Now You See Me 2 that’s been in development for a long time and is finally being released after nearly a decade. They’re already planning a fourth Now You See Me movie, but there’s still no news about another Zombieland film. Eisenberg went on to explain:

I’m interested in making a third Zombieland movie. We released the first one, then a sequel three years later, and then waited ten years for the second sequel. Because of that long gap, I think we’ll probably make more Now You See Me movies than Zombieland movies.

Jesse Eisenberg’s comments suggest we’ll likely see more lighthearted movies in the future, though he hasn’t dismissed the idea of another Zombieland film. Given the ten-year gap between Zombieland and Zombieland: Double Tap, a new outbreak could happen around 2029. Director Ruben Fleischer, who previously worked with Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson on the Now You See Me movies, even joked they might continue making Zombieland films every decade indefinitely.

We were playfully suggesting a new movie every ten years – it’s funny because the second one came out almost exactly ten years after the first! I really love the idea of revisiting that world again around 2029 and seeing what those characters are up to after all this time. Actually, Emma Stone was the one who first joked about doing these films every decade. She even quipped that Woody Harrelson will probably outlive us all because of his vegan lifestyle – and she’s probably right! (laughs) Honestly, it’s been the best experience of my career, and if there’s still interest and the cast is game, I’d be absolutely thrilled to work with those guys again.

A challenge for a potential Zombieland 3 is that Zombieland: Double Tap felt very similar to the first Zombieland movie. While the sequel did well in theaters because fans enjoyed it, critics weren’t as impressed (it scored 68% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the original’s 89%). This suggests audiences might have been losing interest after only two films with the same formula. Director Ruben Fleischer has a plan to address this, but Sony hasn’t approved Zombieland 3 yet.

The main actors from the popular Zombieland movies are all currently working on other projects. Jesse Eisenberg is promoting Now You See Me: Now You Don’t and is expected to return for a fourth installment, alongside Woody Harrelson, who also has several projects in the works. Emma Stone is promoting her new sci-fi comedy Bugonia, while Abigail Breslin is finishing up post-production on Saturday at the Starlight, Don’t Fall Asleep, and A Good Fight. Coordinating everyone’s schedules for another Zombieland film could be difficult, especially with Fleischer focusing on Now You See Me 4 with Eisenberg and Harrelson, but it’s still a possibility.
