Outlander’s Caitríona Balfe lands next movie role in “tremendously powerful” drama

Okay, so I just heard Caitriona Balfe – you know, Claire from Outlander – is going to be in a new movie called A Long Winter! It’s directed by Andrew Haigh, who did All of Us Strangers, which was amazing. Apparently, they’ve got a pretty great cast lined up for it too, which is awesome.

The film features a talented cast including Ebon Moss-Bachrach, known from The Bear and Fantastic Four: First Steps; Kit Connor of Heartstopper; Fred Hechinger, who appears in Gladiator II; D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai from Reservation Dogs; Manuel Garcia Rulfo of Jurassic World: Rebirth; and David Furr from The Gilded Age.

So, I heard they’re actually making this thing a reality! Mubi, the streaming service, and Film4 over in the UK are teaming up to get it done, which is awesome.

The film, inspired by Colm Tóibín’s story, centers on a family living in the mountains—originally set in rural Spain—as they get ready for the coming winter.

Originally published in 2006 as part of the ‘Mothers & Sons’ collection, this story was recently released as a standalone edition in September, coinciding with the film’s release.

According to a review in The Stinging Fly, Tóibín is a gifted storyteller. The review particularly praised his ability to create surprising plot twists that are both insightful and subtly unsettling, highlighting the especially impactful ending of A Long Winter.

Both The Guardian and Kirkus Reviews praised the book, with The Guardian highlighting Tóibín’s masterful handling of emotion and the touching relationship between a mother and son. Kirkus Reviews described it as a moving story about grief, desire, and learning to accept change and loss.

Balfe’s movie, The Cut, came out in the UK recently, and she spent the summer filming a new version of Sense and Sensibility.

The popular series Outlander is coming to an end. Following a lengthy seventh season and the prequel Blood of My Blood, the show’s tenth season, consisting of ten episodes, will conclude the story in early 2026.

A Long Winter is currently filming, it does not currently have a release date.

The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can purchase Ariana & Witches at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
