James Gunn Once Made a “Pitch-Black” Anti Superman Movie… And It’s Flying Onto Free Streaming

James Gunn, known as both a writer and director, is now leading the new DC Universe, which launched this year with his Superman reboot. However, he’s explored similar themes before, having produced a controversial science fiction horror film about an alien with powers who lands in Kansas – a movie that’s now becoming available for free streaming.

The 2019 film, directed by David Yarovesky and written by Brian and Mark Gunn, follows a struggling mother who discovers an alien baby after it crash-lands in Brightburn, Kansas. Produced by James Gunn – now a co-head of DC Studios – the movie also features several actors fans will recognize from Gunn’s Peacemaker, including David Denman, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Michael Rooker.

Imagine if Superman had been born evil. That’s the terrifying premise behind the horror movie Brightburn, which takes a dark twist on the classic hero story. Unlike the hopeful Superman film released this year, Brightburn explores what young Clark Kent might have become if he’d embraced darkness. You’ll be able to stream it for free starting November 1, 2025. Here’s a look at what the movie is about…

Tori Breyer finally achieves her dream of becoming a mother after facing challenges with fertility, welcoming a baby boy named Brandon. He seems perfect – intelligent, gifted, and full of wonder. However, as Brandon approaches his teenage years, a disturbing darkness emerges, filling Tori with unsettling questions about his true nature. When Brandon starts acting on his dark impulses, those he loves find themselves in serious peril.

Will ‘Brightburn 2’ Ever Happen?

Sony Pictures Releasing

The movie Brightburn received mixed reactions from critics and viewers, earning scores of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 67% from audiences. While some criticized how the story was told, others appreciated its dark and unexpected take on the typical superhero story.

The ending of the movie Brightburn hinted at more stories with Brandon Breyer (Brightburn) and suggested that other evil versions of popular DC superheroes might appear. However, a sequel, Brightburn 2, seems unlikely. James Gunn recently stated in 2024 that issues with the film’s rights make it doubtful it will ever be made.

We discussed this possibility at the beginning, but the ownership rights are complicated – I only own 50% – so it probably won’t work out.

James Gunn is currently very focused on launching the DC Universe in both movies and TV shows. He’s writing and directing a Superman sequel, currently titled Man of Tomorrow, and also guiding the development of other projects like Supergirl, Clayface, and The Brave and the Bold, among others.

David Yarovesky, who directed Brightburn, is continuing his work in horror with a new film called He Never Dies. The movie’s plot centers around a man who seemingly can’t be killed, becoming increasingly powerful and less human with each attempt. As the story goes, “No matter what they do…HE. NEVER. DIES.”
