A new take on the classic tale of Robin Hood is coming to MGM+ in November 2025. Produced by Lionsgate Television, this epic series – following the recent show The Institute – will tell a fresh, emotional origin story of the legendary hero. Jack Patten stars as Robin “Rob” Hood, alongside Lauren McQueen as Marian, and Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham.
In an exclusive interview with TopMob’s David Thompson, writer John Glenn shared that the team built the narrative around the character’s beginnings – showing how this rebel transformed into a legend. He explained that while the story has roots stretching back centuries, its enduring appeal continues to draw people in.
Beyond its classic themes of fairness and fighting against oppression, the story of Robin Hood also gives more attention to the love story between Robin and Marian.
Director Jonathan English explained that the romantic relationship between the characters has a “Romeo and Juliet” feel, highlighting the conflict created by their different backgrounds – one Saxon, the other Norman. Both English and Glenn also noted the show’s grand scope and film-like quality, complimenting MGM+ for creating content that appeals to movie fans.
MGM+ has seen success with shows like From, which will likely return for a fourth season in 2026 after some questions about its future following Season 3.
Filmed on location in Serbia, English highlighted that the country’s distinct character and resources enabled the team to achieve a larger scope than would have been possible in many other locations.
A New Robin Hood Origin Story

“His Story Originated Centuries Ago, But There’s A Reason People Are Intrigued By It….”
- TopMob: “How did you strike that balance between honoring the legend of Robin Hood and making it feel fresh for today’s audiences?
We really wanted to show how John Glenn became the legend he was, and we felt the best way to do that was to start at the beginning – with his childhood, his family, and the community where he grew up. This approach makes his story more relatable and personal.
This story has a long history, even older than many adaptations you might be familiar with. While we’ve updated it for modern audiences, the core themes remain surprisingly relevant today. It first appeared centuries ago, but people continue to be drawn to it, suggesting its message always resonates with each new generation.
Rob & Marian’s Revamped Love Story

“Romeo And Juliet Idea Within Their Romance….”
- TopMob: “Rob and Marian are the emotional core of the story. What was it like reimagining that romance and bringing it to the forefront of this series?”
We wanted to create a romance with a bit of a Romeo and Juliet feel. The female character is Norman, the daughter of a Norman lord, and the male character is Saxon, from a Saxon family. This difference highlights the conflict between the Saxons and Normans, which is central to the story’s world and all the political tensions of the time.
Having the characters come from different backgrounds was key, but ultimately, we wanted to create a powerful love story. MGM, the studio, really supported that vision and encouraged us to focus on it. We felt it would make the story feel more genuine, relatable, and emotionally impactful.
Robin Hood’s Epic Scale on MGM+

“Television For Film Lovers. ….”
- TopMob: “It seems very cinematic for a television series. Can you talk about the visual style you guys are going for and the scale of the series?
As a huge movie fan, what really excites me about MGM+ is that they’re clearly focused on delivering content for people who love film. They were the ideal partner for us, and incredibly supportive of our vision. It just felt like the right fit.
As the director, Jonathan had such a clear vision for the entire series – really big, ambitious ideas, honestly. There were moments we questioned if we could actually make them happen, but somehow, we did! He’s a true visualist, and it really shows.
“Serbia Is An Incredibly Unique And Special Place…”
We didn’t aim for something overly flashy or glamorous with this project. Our goal was to build a believable world, and that needed a certain level of visual quality and scale to achieve.
Much of this success is thanks to Serbia, where we filmed the show. It’s a truly special place with a rich filmmaking tradition and a highly skilled team of crew and technicians.
We constructed massive sets in stunning natural locations – beautiful forests and rolling hills – as well as on soundstages at the studio.
Being able to film here really opened things up for us creatively. We could achieve a much bigger, more impressive scope than we could have almost anywhere else, and the quality was exceptional – something I think is special about filmmaking in Serbia. It truly allowed us to make something special.
