While Thor’s death in the most recent Marvel Cinematic Universe film was sad, it’s actually made me more excited about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and how it will continue his story. The MCU has shown it’s willing to let original Avengers characters go – we already saw this with Black Widow and Iron Man – so it’s not a completely unexpected development.
Since only a handful of the original heroes are still active in the current MCU timeline, it wasn’t clear if Marvel would risk killing off more major characters. However, the announced death of Thor in 2025 surprisingly suggests he could still have a significant role to play in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie.
Thor’s 2025 MCU Death Makes A Devastating Avengers: Doomsday Theory Seem Less Likely

Rumors about Thor potentially dying in the next Avengers movie have been circulating for a long time, even before the film’s title was decided. These theories existed when the movie was originally planned as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and have only grown stronger with recent changes to the film’s plans and comments made by Chris Hemsworth about his character.
Considering the most recent Thor movie before Avengers: Doomsday actually kills his character, it seems unlikely Doomsday will do the same. Killing Thor off in two consecutive movies would be a strange creative choice for the MCU.
The way Marvel Zombies killed off Thor – having him bravely fight a crazed Scarlet Witch and then succumb to the force of their battle before turning into a zombie – is surprisingly interesting.
Because Marvel Zombies takes place in a separate reality, it’s possible no one considered whether killing Thor there would affect the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, considering the significant effort and resources devoted to Avengers: Doomsday – and the promise that the movie will give fans what they’re hoping for – it seems unlikely that Marvel leaders would approve Thor’s death in Zombies just before his expected death in the main storyline.
Killing Thor In Avengers: Doomsday Would Be A Mistake (& Not Just Because It Would Make Me Sad)

I’ve always been a big fan of the Thor comics, so I’ve been invested in the MCU’s version of the character for a long time. The thought of him dying right after becoming a father figure to Love in Thor: Love & Thunder is genuinely sad. However, that’s not the main reason I believe Thor should survive any potential ‘Doomsday’ scenario.
A truly impactful death in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could actually benefit Avengers: Doomsday. It would create a powerfully emotional scene and demonstrate the real danger facing the heroes in a way that simply talking about it or showing off powers never could.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently facing a challenge: audiences haven’t connected with the newer heroes in the same way they did with the original Avengers. With only Thor remaining as a prominent member of that original team – and considering the Hulk and Hawkeye haven’t always been central figures – removing Thor from the story could be a significant loss for the franchise.
Considering the 2015 Secret Wars comic featured a compelling Thor storyline—with countless versions of the God of Thunder serving as Doctor Doom’s enforcers—there are several reasons why Avengers: Doomsday doesn’t feel like the right place to conclude Thor’s story, even if it just means passing the responsibility on to Avengers: Secret Wars.
