Martin Sheen has confirmed that a continuation of Aaron Sorkin’s popular drama, The West Wing, is unlikely. The show, which ran for seven seasons, followed the lives of a U.S. president and their White House staff. A special reunion episode aired in 2020 as a way to encourage people to vote in the presidential election.
During a conversation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Martin Sheen discussed the possibility of continuing The West Wing beyond its 2006 finale. The actor, best known as President Jed Bartlet, stated that a sequel to the show will not happen.
Charlie Sheen likened Aaron Sorkin to Bob Dylan, explaining that Sorkin consistently focuses on the future rather than dwelling on the past. He also described The West Wing as a strong starting point that allowed Sorkin to pursue other creative endeavors.
Sheen confessed that even if Aaron Sorkin had considered continuing The West Wing, he hadn’t discussed it with anyone from the show’s cast.
I’ve always admired how Aaron Sorkin reminds me of Bob Dylan – he’s completely focused on what’s next. His earlier work isn’t something he dwells on, but it’s clearly the incredible base that lets him take risks and explore really personal themes. He never seemed to look back, at least not to me or anyone I know. And that’s amazing because even when you rewatch his older shows, they still feel so current and meaningful today.
Despite reports that Aaron Sorkin hadn’t considered bringing back The West Wing, he’s actually spoken about it himself. During the show’s 25th anniversary celebration in fall 2024, Sorkin said he’d be open to revisiting the series if he had a compelling new concept.
Years ago, Aaron Sorkin shared his idea for a possible West Wing continuation: it would feature former President Bartlet advising the current president during a crisis. He even said he’d love to have Sterling K. Brown, known for his roles in This Is Us and The People v. O.J. Simpson, play the current president.
As a huge fan of Aaron Sorkin’s work, especially The West Wing, I think revisiting that show would be incredibly tough. It was a truly special moment in television, and anything new would have to live up to impossibly high expectations – and honestly, I’m not sure anything could quite recapture that magic.
The first season of The West Wing starred Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney, Richard Schiff, John Spencer, Bradley Whitford, Janel Moloney, and Stockard Channing.
The 2024 special gave the actors a chance to celebrate The West Wing. But creating a sequel series would be challenging because it’s improbable the original characters would all return to work in the White House again, given that they likely wouldn’t be serving in a future presidential administration.
The idea of having a current president seek advice from Bartlet seems like the best way to bring back The West Wing. It would allow the show to feel both new and connected to the original, and importantly, it would still feature Martin Sheen.
Charlie Sheen said Aaron Sorkin doesn’t revisit his old work, but Sorkin has suggested otherwise in the past. It’s possible Sorkin simply doesn’t have a strong idea for a continuation now. Regardless of what happens with the series, The West Wing remains a truly iconic show, and that legacy won’t fade.
