On Thursday, October 30th, Vladimir Putin boasted about Russia’s new military technology, which he claims will protect the country from global threats. This kind of announcement has become commonplace, and many find it contributes to the general anxiety of modern life.
This device is an underwater drone powered by a nuclear reactor. Essentially, it’s a self-piloted nuclear submarine designed to carry a nuclear weapon that could trigger a highly radioactive tsunami. It’s a concept that seems more at home in a spy movie than reality.
Or Netflix’s The Diplomat.
What to Read Next
The central mystery in the Netflix series The Diplomat revolves around a nuclear-powered underwater drone. This dangerous device is aboard a Russian submarine near the UK, and its existence sparks a major political crisis. The US and UK quickly realize Russia now has the capability to devastate coastal cities and spread radioactive contamination along their shores.
The U.S. Ambassador to the UK, the President of the United States, and the British Prime Minister find themselves in a complicated diplomatic situation, disagreeing on how to handle a crisis.

In the (fictional) show, the device is called Poseidon, after the Greek god of the sea.
Interestingly, Putin’s underwater drone is named Poseidon, a reference to the Greek god known for dramatic and unexpected twists of fate.
It’s no coincidence: both The Diplomat and Russia’s defense industry independently developed the same underwater nuclear drone, designed to carry warheads, and gave it the same name: Poseidon.
We definitely aren’t claiming the creators of The Diplomat got secret intelligence from Russia and based their show on it to warn people about the risks involved.
Nor are we suggesting they’re psychic.
It’s unsettling how accurate The Diplomat was in predicting this event, and we should definitely keep a close eye on their reporting about global affairs going forward. It feels like more than just chance that they got it so right.
The Diplomat is available to watch on Netflix now.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can purchase Ariana & Witches at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
