IOC, Saudi Arabia part ways on Olympic Esports Games

The International Olympic Committee and Saudi Arabia’s Olympic committee have ended their partnership regarding the Olympic Esports Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has stopped working with Saudi Arabia’s Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SOPC) on the Olympic Esports Games. The event was originally planned for 2025, but it was announced in 2024 and then put on hold.

IOC’s statement on Olympic Esports Games

The IOC issued a brief post on the official Olympics website to deliver the news.

The Olympic Esports Games are generating a lot of enthusiasm from everyone involved in the Olympics and the wider esports world, and people are eagerly anticipating the inaugural event.

The two organizations and the Esports World Cup Foundation recently met to discuss their collaboration. They’ve decided to end their partnership regarding the Olympic Esports Games, and will now each focus on their own esports goals independently.

The International Olympic Committee

The Saudi Esports Federation (SOPC) is expected to keep collaborating with the Esports World Cup Foundation. The foundation recently announced the Esports Nations Cup, a competition where players will compete on behalf of their countries rather than traditional esports teams. The first event is planned for 2026.

The International Olympic Committee plans to revamp the Olympic Esports Games, using what they’ve learned from a recent review. They’re also looking for new partners, though details about who they’re considering haven’t been released yet. This announcement is fairly general at this point.

According to officials, the new strategy will help align the Olympic Esports Games with the overall goals of the Olympic Movement and expand access to these events. They aim to hold the first Games as quickly as possible.

Okay, so I was starting to worry about the Olympic esports thing, but it sounds like the IOC is getting a lot of positive feedback from both the Olympic side and us gamers! They’ve said people really want this to happen, which is awesome. It’s not dead in the water, and honestly, they’re hinting it could actually happen sooner than we think. That’s a huge relief, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

IOC, EWCF, and SOPC

Okay, so this gaming event was a really big deal from the start. It was announced back in 2024 as a collaboration with the EWCF and a Saudi committee, and we were all super hyped for it in 2025. Unfortunately, things got delayed, and now it’s scheduled for 2027. It’s been a bit of a wait, but hopefully it’ll be worth it!

Moreover, the Games were set to be held in Saudi Arabia for 12 straight years.
