Channel Seven’s hilarious on-air gaffe leaves viewers in stitches

A Channel Seven gaffe has left Aussies – and Channel Ten star Melanie Bracewell – in stitches.

The host of The Cheap Seats and her co-anchor, Tim McDonald, were laughing while watching a clip of 7News Melbourne’s Peter Mitchell during a live broadcast.

The video shows Peter sharing some exciting news about women’s health, but a technical issue during the broadcast created a hilarious moment.

‘Australian women are being given more choice when it comes to contraceptives,’ Peter began. 

He announced that NuvaRing would be covered by the PBS starting Saturday, though the presentation was momentarily derailed by a completely unrelated video of a car crash playing on the screen.

The video was met with uncontainable laughter from the producers in the studio.

‘Oh, that’s clearly the wrong story,’ Peter awkwardly pointed out. 

Melanie hilariously poked fun at the gaffe on The Cheap Seats.

She exclaimed, encouraging someone to get a Mirena IUD, even pumping her fist in the air as she said, ‘Come on, get that IUD!’

The 30-year-old then quipped: ‘Wait, you can get an IUD and a DUI! That’s amazing!’ 

This isn’t the first live gaffe Peter has suffered while presenting a broadcast.  

During the 6 p.m. news in 2021, Peter unknowingly drank some water while still on camera.

The presenter was unaware he was on air and thought it was a commercial break.

Someone off camera, likely a producer, said something that clearly surprised Peter, who immediately put down the bottle and moved on to the next part of the show.

At the end of the package, Peter told viewers: ‘Just having a drink of water.’

Peter also became the longest-serving newsreader in Channel Seven Melbourne’s history that year, after 21 years with the station.

He told The Herald Sun it’s a significant achievement, one he hadn’t expected to reach, and he’s very proud to be Seven’s longest-serving news presenter.

‘It’s been a wild ride, no doubt about it, never a dull moment.

He said it’s strange to realize he’s only worked in two newsrooms, especially after 44 years in the business and having only had two bosses. He often has to remind himself how fortunate he is to have had such a fulfilling career.
