Veteran newsreader QUITS Network Ten and is replaced with younger co-star

A longtime newsreader has left Ten after seven years on the job. She’s been replaced by a much younger colleague – over 20 years her junior.

Popular Australian journalist Chris Bath has left Channel Ten, reportedly because the network can no longer afford to pay her to present weekend news.

After 58 years with the network, Bath is stepping down and will be replaced by Georgie Tunny, age 34. Tunny joined the network in 2022 as a host on The Project, according to news.com.au.

After leaving Seven in 2015, Bath joined Ten and quickly became a regular on shows like Studio 10 and The Project.

She began regularly co-hosting The Sunday Project in 2017, but Lisa Wilkinson took over the role in 2018.

In June, the show was cancelled because it was too expensive to produce. This resulted in the departure of hosts Waleed Aly, Sarah Harris, Steve Price, and Hamish Macdonald from Network Ten.

Bath went on to replace Natarsha Belling as a presenter on 10 News Weekend in December 2018.

She currently presents several news programs, including a 90-minute national bulletin on Saturday evenings, a dedicated Perth news show, and a one-hour Sunday evening bulletin for both national and Perth audiences.

The journalist currently hosts the Drive program on ABC Radio Sydney, taking over from Richard Glover earlier this year in January.

Just hours after it was announced that Ten’s new current affairs program had been cancelled due to low viewership, Bath has left the network.

On Thursday, it was announced that 10 News+ episodes will now be only 30 minutes long, a reduction from their previous hour-long format.

The news program, featuring Denham Hitchcock and Amelia Brace – both recently hired from Seven – hasn’t attracted many viewers since it first aired in June, despite being on the air for four months.

After 16 years, the show The Project was cancelled and replaced with 10 News+. However, despite being promoted as a new and informative program, 10 News+ hasn’t yet gained a large audience.

10 News+ will broadcast six days a week. Brace and Hitchcock will present the show from Sunday to Thursday, and Ursula Heger and Hugh Riminton will host on Fridays.

Martin White, head of news at Ten, said the change would reduce workload and let journalists report on more stories, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The team will work more effectively now that they don’t have the pressure of daily reporting, allowing them to focus on developing more in-depth stories.

10 News+ launched on June 30th as a sophisticated current affairs show, airing at 6pm after the 5pm news. However, it hasn’t yet lived up to expectations with viewers.

More to come.
