Stranger Things Blocked The First Shadow Spoilers For Season 5

The creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, recently shared how they worked with the producers of the show’s Broadway prequel, The First Shadow, to avoid revealing any plot details about the upcoming fifth season. The First Shadow originally premiered in London’s West End (at the Phoenix Theatre) in 2023 before coming to Broadway in New York City in 2025.

The First Shadow is an official prequel to the Netflix hit Stranger Things, directed by Stephen Daldry. Written by Katy Trefry, the Duffer Brothers, and Jack Thorne, the play tells the story of Henry Creel – who later becomes the villain Vecna – and his childhood in the town of Hawkins, Indiana.

The writers of Stranger Things have suggested that The First Shadow – a play connected to the show – will be significant in the fifth and final season. Because of this, they had to closely control what information the play revealed to audiences, so they wouldn’t accidentally spoil the ending of Stranger Things.

The Duffer Brothers, in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, described the play as a way to bridge the gap between seasons of the show. Ross Duffer called it “a little connective tissue.” But they also emphasized that viewers don’t need to see The First Shadow to follow the story in the final season.

Matt Duffer explained that season 5 of Stranger Things will focus on key events from the stage play adaptation of the show. He noted that much of what’s featured in the Broadway production will also be included in the final season. This is why they sometimes had to push back against ideas from the play’s producers, as they didn’t want the play to reveal too much about what would happen in season 5.

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will be released on Netflix in three volumes. The first part will arrive on November 26, 2025, followed by the second on December 25, 2025, and the third on December 31, 2025.
