Both DC and Marvel faced challenges in 2025, but DC, under James Gunn’s leadership, arguably had the stronger year. They released the most financially successful superhero movie and were the only major franchise to reveal significant plans for the future. Looking ahead, Marvel’s MCU has two new Avengers films and the return of Spider-Man with Tom Holland planned.
Although Marvel has a promising future, its 2025 films didn’t perform as well in theaters. The Fantastic Four: First Steps was their biggest hit, earning $521.9 million globally. However, DC’s Superman movie led the year with $616 million. Superman wasn’t just the top superhero film of 2025; it also reversed a recent pattern of disappointing results.
Superman Is The Only 2025 Superhero Movie To Have A Sequel Announced

This year, Marvel Studios released three films: Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The first two movies paved the way for new teams of Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps finally brought Marvel’s version of the Fantastic Four to the big screen. However, Marvel hasn’t announced whether any of these films will get sequels, despite their significance.
DC Studios is taking a different approach. They’ve announced a sequel to James Gunn’s Superman movie, and it’s coming out sooner than you might think, with some details already available. The new film, Man of Tomorrow, is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027, just two years after David Corenswet first appears as Superman.
As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited about Man of Tomorrow! It’s going to bring David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor together on screen. Now, they definitely won’t be buddies, but James Gunn has said they’ll actually have to team up to face an even bigger villain – everyone’s saying it’s going to be Brainiac! And honestly, after Superman finally turned a profit and became DC’s biggest superhero hit in ages, a sequel just feels right. It’s great to see things heading in a positive direction!
Why The MCU Might Be Waiting To Announce Sequels To Its 2025 Movies

Beyond how well the movies are doing in theaters, there’s a likely reason Marvel hasn’t announced sequels to its 2025 films. The main characters from all three movies will be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday next year, and Marvel probably wants to avoid revealing spoilers about who survives and who doesn’t.
Rumor has it the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be refreshed after the Avengers: Secret Wars movie in 2027. Because of this, Marvel is likely still deciding which characters and teams to feature in future films. Meanwhile, DC, with James Gunn’s new universe just beginning, has a clearer plan, which is why a Superman sequel is already in the works – and that’s exciting news!
