Jesse Eisenberg is donating a kidney to someone he doesn’t know, sharing that he’s been inspired to do something selfless.
The 42-year-old actor, who has been nominated for an Oscar, has been a regular blood donor for years. Now, he’s taking his commitment to helping others even further by donating a kidney to someone he doesn’t know.
He announced on the TODAY show Thursday morning that he’s donating a kidney in six weeks, stating, ‘I really am.’
When asked about his surprising and generous choice, Eisenberg admitted he didn’t know why he’d made it.
The celebrity said they weren’t sure why, but they’d recently decided to start donating blood. They’re planning a donation around mid-December and are really looking forward to it, saying they ‘caught the blood donation bug’ and want to give back.
As a lifestyle expert focused on wellness, I often talk about giving back. One incredibly impactful way to do that is through altruistic kidney donation. Simply put, it’s when someone generously donates a kidney to a complete stranger who desperately needs it due to advanced kidney disease. It’s a truly selfless act that can literally save a life.

As a lifestyle expert focused on wellness and giving back, I often talk about the incredible generosity of non-directed kidney donors. These are people who choose to donate a kidney to someone in need, even though they don’t have a personal connection – it’s not going to a family member, friend, or anyone they know. It’s a truly selfless act, offering a life-saving gift to a stranger.
This generous act is especially welcome given the critical shortage of organ donors in the US. As of September 2024, the Health Resources and Services Administration reports around 90,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant alone.
As someone who’s really thought about well-being, I’ve made a choice I think others should consider too. Honestly, it’s a no-brainer – there’s virtually no downside, and it’s something so many of us really need in our lives right now.
‘I think people will realize that it’s a no-brainer, if you have the time and the inclination.’
The actor clearly put a lot of effort into understanding this topic, and he explained how it can really help people who need it.
Eisenberg illustrated the situation with an example: imagine someone in Kansas City needs a kidney, and their intended donor isn’t a compatible match. But, surprisingly, I am a match.
I’m still willing to donate a kidney to that person, and I hope their child will consider donating too. The idea is that the kidneys would go to a central exchange program where they can find a suitable recipient, but this system really depends on people donating out of kindness, without expecting anything in return.
