Chicago Fire’s Vasquez Has A Crossover-Worthy Tie To Chicago P.D., So Will We Finally Get Another Two-Parter This Season?

Be warned: this contains spoilers for the fifth episode of Chicago Fire Season 14, titled “Ghosts.” The episode will be available to stream tomorrow with a Peacock subscription.

As a TV critic, I’ve been following Brandon Larracuente’s move within the Dick Wolf universe, and it’s already paying off. After On Call was canceled, he landed in Chicago Fire, and his character, Sal Vasquez, is dealing with a lot. We’ve seen Sal struggle with how to handle his father’s attempts to get released from jail, but a phone call changed everything. That call motivated Sal to visit his dad and finally confront him, and the news his father dropped was a real shocker – a potential connection between the Chicago Fire and Police Departments. Honestly, as a fan of these shows, I’m already dreaming of the crossover possibilities this could unlock!

In “Ghosts,” Sal briefly confronted his father, but their intense conversation quickly revealed Ray’s continued problematic behavior. The scene was well-done, advancing the storyline for the firefighters and highlighting that while Ray may not be a murderer, he’s still a deeply flawed parent. Fueled by Ray calling the firehouse and speaking with Kidd, Sal angrily accused his father of ruining both his aspirations to become a police officer and now his chances at a successful firefighting career. Ray then responded:

You’re in trouble at the CFD, but it’s not my fault. Actually, I’m the only reason you haven’t lost your job yet. I’ve always had your back, even when you were young. Don’t think being in jail changes that – it’s not a problem. I have a connection with your commissioner through a friend in the police department. You once told me you dreamed of being a firefighter, so I called in a favor to help you get the job.

I’m starting to suspect there’s a larger story involving a mutual friend connected to the Chicago Police Department. This feeling is especially strong because Commander Devlin – a new character introduced in the latest season of Chicago P.D. – appeared in an episode immediately following the “Ghosts” storyline on October 29th. It’s worth noting that Ray described this man as someone with the influence to get anyone placed in a top firehouse, and his father hinted that he’s simply looking out for him.

Could the mutual friend we keep hearing about actually be Commander Devlin, a character from the P.D. show? There’s a chance he might appear on Fire next season (2025-2026), potentially leading to a two-part crossover event like the one the original One Chicago shows used to do every year. It’s definitely possible, and it’s interesting to consider with so many unanswered questions. Honestly, I’m more engaged with Vasquez’s storyline now than I have been all season – and that’s saying a lot, especially considering it followed so closely after the emotional impact of Herrmann’s loss in the “Ghosts” episode.

The complex storyline involving Sal, CFD, Ray, and CPD appears to be taking a backseat in the next episode, titled “Broken Things.” Violet and Novak will be dealing with a patient while stuck in traffic, and Severide will be working with Pascal, bringing Dylan McDermott back to the show. Plus, Kidd will be helping Isaiah. You can watch a preview below.

You can continue watching new episodes of Chicago Fire on NBC Wednesdays at 9 p.m. Eastern. It airs between Chicago Med at 8 p.m. and Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. If you’d like to catch up on what’s happened with Vasquez, all three shows are also available to stream on Peacock.
