Comic books remain incredibly popular, but there’s been a lot happening with DC recently. The old DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is finished and now available to stream on HBO Max, and the new DC Universe, led by co-CEO James Gunn, has already begun with its first three projects. Despite the fresh start, fans are still discussing the previous universe, and it’s been revealed that Jason Momoa had a surprisingly simple reaction – just five words – when he first got the part of Aquaman.
The initial wave of projects for the new DC Universe is called ‘Gods and Monsters,’ and Jason Momoa will be taking on the role of Lobo. However, he’s still widely known for playing Aquaman, a character he successfully transformed into a powerful and imposing figure. In a recent interview with The New York Times, the 46-year-old actor shared his initial thoughts when he first landed the Aquaman role, saying he thought:
If this fails, I’m screwed.
I really can’t blame Jason Momoa for being hesitant about taking on Aquaman! DC was trying something big with its own universe of heroes, and let’s face it, Aquaman isn’t always the first hero people think of like Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman. He showed up in Justice League, and then got his own movie directed by James Wan. Honestly, everyone was worried it might flop, but it totally surprised us all and became the biggest hit in the whole DCEU! So, thankfully, he ended up being in a really good spot after all.

HBO Max offers streaming access to DC content, including Aquaman starring Jason Momoa, and a wide variety of movies, shows, and documentaries. Plans begin at $10.99 per month for the Basic With Ads option.
After the disappointing performance of the Justice League movie, Aquaman‘s success was a major win for the DC Extended Universe, and Jason Momoa continued to play Aquaman in several projects, including a cameo in Peacemaker and the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Sadly, the sequel didn’t do as well as the first Aquaman film, likely because audiences felt it was the end of the line for the DCEU and weren’t as invested in seeing it.

Jason Momoa’s time as Aquaman ended somewhat disappointingly, but he’s now landed a role he’s excited about: the intergalactic villain Lobo. Though details about the new Supergirl movie are scarce, Momoa is confirmed to be part of the cast. He’s clearly very enthusiastic about the character, and I’m eager to see what he brings to this next big DC film.
It’s still unclear what James Gunn has in store for the DC Universe, and I’m eager to see who might play Aquaman in this new shared world. It would be exciting if Jason Momoa’s Lobo and the new Aquaman crossed paths. However, as of now, there’s no word on when we might see the character appear.
The upcoming DC film Supergirl is scheduled for release on June 26th, 2026. Jason Momoa will also be joining the DC Universe, making his debut as Lobo, marking his return to superhero movies.
