After 63 years, a movie based on the classic Halloween song “Monster Mash” is finally being made! The song, a Halloween staple since its 1962 release, was written by Bobby “Boris” Pickett & The Crypt Kickers, along with Lenny Capizzi.
Miramax is making an animated movie based on the classic song “Monster Mash,” according to Deadline. Jonathan Glickman, the studio’s CEO, who has a track record of successful spooky projects like the popular Netflix series Wednesday and the animated Addams Family films, has acquired the rights to the song from Reservoir and Capizzi Music Co. He announced the news with a statement.
As a total movie and music lover, I’m so excited about this! For over 60 years, you just think of Halloween and the “Monster Mash” comes to mind. I’m really honored that the families who created the song, the Picketts and Capizzis, and Reservoir Media have asked me to help bring it to life as an animated musical for everyone. We’re aiming to capture all the fun and energy of the original, and honestly, I think it’s going to become a Halloween tradition for generations to come – a real ‘graveyard smash’ if you will!

The story told in the song “Monster Mash” would work really well as a movie. The song is sung by a mad scientist who creates a monster that comes to life and starts a new dance based on the popular ’60s dance, the Mashed Potato. The dance becomes incredibly popular when the scientist throws a party for classic monsters like Wolfman, Igor, Mummy, Dracula and his son, with music provided by a group called The Crypt-Kicker Five.
As a film buff, I’m really noticing a trend: family-friendly spooky movies are doing incredibly well right now! We’ve seen it with stuff like The Addams Family animated films, the Hotel Transylvania series from Sony, and Goosebumps.
