Apple Martin releases music video after nepo baby’s singing was slammed as ‘off-key drunken karaoke performance’

Apple Martin, the daughter of Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow, recently shared a new music video following criticism of her first attempt, which some described as sounding like a poorly performed karaoke session.

Following in the footsteps of her famous father, the 48-year-old lead singer of Coldplay, the 21-year-old is launching her own music career.

On Tuesday, Apple released the music video for the song ‘Satellites,’ a collaboration with the indie rock band Jade Street, which features musicians Eli Meyuhas and Zachary Zwelling.

Gwyneth Paltrow, 53, and Chris Martin, 48, were married for thirteen years, from 2003 until 2016, and share two children: Apple and her 19-year-old brother, Moses, who is also pursuing a career in music.

Coldplay has won seven Grammy Awards and nine Brit Awards, and has sold over 160 million records globally. The band’s success is partly rooted in family talent, as their mother previously showcased her singing ability in films like Duets, Country Strong, and Infamous.

The song’s melancholic feel was matched by its black-and-white music video, which was shot at her first performance in Nashville last week. That performance received some criticism regarding her singing.

Although we couldn’t hear her singing live in the video, the song’s chorus – ‘And I wanna take you away / I wanna push ’til it breaks’ – played instead.

Near the end of the performance, the singer lets her personality shine through with a little dance before thanking the audience after finishing the song.

The rock duo explained in a recent press release how their collaboration with Chris Martin’s daughter came about. They said they’d written the song ‘Satellites’ about a year ago, but it hadn’t quite felt finished until now.

The song sat unfinished for months, until we shared it with a particular artist. Her vocals immediately transformed it, giving it a completely fresh feel. It became obvious she was exactly what the song needed, and after that, finishing the recording felt natural and easy.

The music video was shot at the same unexpected concert where Apple received some criticism for how she performed.

Videos from Friday’s performance quickly spread online, and many people commented negatively on the performer’s singing. A lot of viewers argued she didn’t share the same musical gift as her famous father, the lead singer of Coldplay.

An up-and-coming artist performed with the musical duo Jade Street at Cannery Hall in Nashville, but her singing was compared to someone doing karaoke while intoxicated.

Honestly, I’ve been seeing so much hate online! Everyone on TikTok is losing it, saying things like, ‘Nepotism has totally ruined everything creative!’ and ‘Ugh, this person is just another example of someone who got famous because of their parents – I can’t get behind it.’ It’s like, people are so over it, constantly asking, ‘Seriously, are we not tired of hearing about nepotism yet?’ It’s just… everywhere, and people are really starting to call it out.

Her Instagram post of the video received a lot of positive feedback, but some people on TikTok were much more critical of the performance.

Many people have accused Apple of showing favoritism after her performance of the song “Satellite,” a collaboration with Jade Street, which will be released on October 28th.

The model looked stylish on stage with her white crop top, black miniskirt, and knee-high boots, but her singing didn’t quite measure up.

Comments on TikTok included remarks like, ‘She really takes after Gwyneth Paltrow’s boldness,’ and ‘She should probably let her dad handle the singing.’

One person questioned if this was a joke, admitting they were confused. They briefly felt hopeful, then wondered if the person in question was simply a good actor.

Meanwhile, one user said: ‘Nepotism. Yikes. She’s not a singer.’

A different comment read: ‘Nepotism at its finest’ and ‘Apple fell really far from the tree.’

People on Instagram commented that her singing sounded like a drunken karaoke performance. Some compared it to a memorable scene in the movie Bridget Jones’s Diary, where Renée Zellweger sings while tipsy.

People continued to share their thoughts, with one saying they always sound the same after a few drinks while doing karaoke. Another commented that the singer should probably let her father take the lead when it comes to singing.

Another wrote: ‘Nepotism is wild. People with ordinary talent get the spotlight.’

One said: ‘I’ve seen better singers in my town’s middle school plays.’

Someone recently brought up the iconic scene in Bridget Jones’s Diary where she belts out a song – you know, that one.

However, comments on her Instagram – also posted by Jade Street – were overwhelmingly positive, including remarks like ‘Gorgeous voice!!’, ‘You sound heavenly,’ and ‘You sound amazing.’ One commenter even playfully said, ‘It’s like a female Chris Martin – I don’t need to switch sides now!’

‘Sounds incredible!’ and ‘What a beautiful voice,’ were posted.

The model is a student at Vanderbilt University, where she’s majoring in law, history, and society, as she shared with Interview magazine earlier this year.

She’s also enjoying acting as a hobby, and is currently performing with the Vanderbilt Original Cast, a well-respected cabaret group.

This semester’s musical is a hilarious parody of the show Love Island, titled ‘Love on an Island.’ It’s a really fun show with fantastic songs!

During an interview in April, she explained that because she has a naturally low voice, when the group sings harmonies, they jokingly refer to her part as ‘the boys and Apple,’ highlighting how her voice blends with the male vocalists.

I’m really excited to be singing one of my favorite songs this semester. I know I’m not the strongest singer in the group, but I’m having a great time.
