Netflix Is Bringing Another Beloved Video Game to Life on Streaming

Netflix is developing a video game series based on the popular Crash Bandicoot franchise. This exciting news comes from the studio that created the acclaimed adaptations of The Last of Us and Uncharted, finally bringing this beloved, family-friendly action-adventure series to viewers.

Netflix is reportedly creating an animated series based on the popular Crash Bandicoot video game franchise, according to What’s on Netflix. While the producers haven’t been announced yet, the show will add to Netflix’s growing collection of video game adaptations, which already includes hits like Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and the recently released Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. The original Crash Bandicoot game was created by Naughty Dog and first launched in 1996. Naughty Dog made two sequels before the rights shifted to other developers, culminating in the 2023 game, Crash Team Rumble.

According to a report from What’s on Netflix, the upcoming animated series will center on Crash Bandicoot, a genetically engineered bandicoot who constantly battles his nemesis, Doctor Neo Cortex. Crash, famous for his orange fur and goofy personality, is one of PlayStation’s most iconic characters. While the franchise isn’t as popular as it once was, Crash Bandicoot is a good fit for a TV show, and it will likely be geared towards families, unlike some of Netflix’s darker animated series like Arcane and Castlevania.

Beyond the previously announced Crash Bandicoot project, Netflix is developing adaptations of several other popular video games, including Assassin’s Creed, Gears of War, and BioShock. While Netflix has found success with animated game adaptations, these new projects—especially the live-action ones—will be their biggest challenge yet. Despite the growing popularity of video game adaptations overall, live-action versions often receive mixed reviews, and one particular adaptation has already faced significant difficulties.

A live-action BioShock movie is still planned for Netflix, with The Long Walk director Francis Lawrence attached. However, it may take longer than expected. The script is currently being revised, and the movie will likely have a smaller budget than originally planned back in 2022. Producer Roy Lee recently shared that the film is set to be Lawrence’s next project, after he finishes directing The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Production on BioShock was temporarily paused while we refined the script. During that time, we filmed ‘The Long Walk,’ and the actor was already scheduled to appear in the next ‘Hunger Games’ movie. We’re now waiting for his availability after finishing ‘Hunger Games,’ and the script is currently being revised.
