The highly anticipated movie’s initial negative review has been removed. Rotten Tomatoes, the popular review website, has taken back its only ‘Rotten’ rating for the film after reconsidering its assessment.
Released internationally on October 24th, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc quickly became both a critical and commercial hit. It topped the U.S. box office during its opening weekend, surpassing both the Bruce Springsteen biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere and even beating out Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which was previously the highest-grossing anime film ever. The movie initially earned a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though that score later changed.
Chainsaw Man Regains Its 100% RT Rating Following NYT Review Confusion

I watched as Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc had a strong start on October 24th, but things quickly changed. The first negative review appeared on Rotten Tomatoes just a day later, and it came from the New York Times. Their critic, Nicolas Rapold, felt the main character, Denji, lacked depth, which caused the film’s approval rating to drop to 98%.
Fans criticized a recent review, arguing it overlooked how Denji’s difficult past deeply impacted his character. While reviewers didn’t find Denji relatable, most of the review was positive. Notably, the review didn’t include a score. Rotten Tomatoes typically considers scores below 60% as “Rotten,” and this review was categorized as such, seemingly due to a brief section questioning Denji’s relatability.
Although Rotten Tomatoes and the New York Times haven’t officially responded to the criticism surrounding the review, Rotten Tomatoes appears to have taken notice. On October 27th, they changed the New York Times review of Chainsaw Man from “Rotten” to “Fresh”, restoring the film’s perfect 100% “Fresh” rating on the site.
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is now playing in theaters.
