One of the biggest players in television is changing teams.
Taylor Sheridan, the creator of “Yellowstone,” is expected to move his production deal from Paramount to NBCUniversal in 2029. A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed the move but wasn’t permitted to discuss it publicly.
Sheridan’s deal with Paramount concludes at the end of 2028. Financial terms were not disclosed.
This news is a setback for Paramount, which has been working hard to attract top actors and filmmakers since David Ellison and his company, Skydance Media, took control.
The media company, currently trying to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery, has spent a lot of money on sports broadcasting rights, renewing the popular show “South Park,” and attracting filmmakers like the creators of “Stranger Things” (Matt and Ross Duffer) and James Mangold, director of “A Complete Unknown.”
The NBC deal, first reported by Puck, will take effect in 2029.
Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” universe has become incredibly important to Paramount. Company leaders highlighted his shows as a central part of their Paramount+ streaming service during a recent meeting with the press.
Originally starting as a cable show in 2018, “Yellowstone” quickly became a hugely popular drama. This is quite a success story, considering several networks initially rejected the series before it found a home at Paramount.
The success of “Yellowstone” greatly benefited Taylor Sheridan, allowing him to create spin-offs like “1923” and additional shows through his production company, including “Tulsa King,” “Landman,” and “Mayor of Kingston.”
Paramount and Sheridan’s representatives haven’t yet responded to a request for comment, and NBCUniversal declined to offer one.
