Country stars Keith Urban and Blake Shelton teamed up to host a new singing competition created by Taylor Sheridan. Shortly before the show aired this month, news came out that Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman were divorcing after 19 years of marriage. Knowing the show was filmed during the final months of their marriage might explain some of Urban’s on-screen moments – and it definitely added a layer to the playful banter between him and Shelton about dating and pickup lines.
In the second episode of The Road, available on Paramount+, the musicians performed in Dallas, Texas, for two nights with a live audience. Contestant Jenny Tolman began her performance by asking if anyone was there with a loved one, then asked them to share a hug. Blake Shelton and Keith Urban happily obliged, embracing each other before Urban continued with Tolman’s prompt by saying to Shelton:
I am going to love you until my tank is empty.
Everyone on The Road seemed happy during the interview, but it was still a little bittersweet to hear that Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman’s RV journey—a tradition of 20 years—is ending. At least they shared a warm hug before saying goodbye.

A little later in the show, another moment subtly hinted at Keith Urban’s impending divorce. The former coach on The Voice and judge on American Idol had a conversation that went like this:
- Blake Shelton: You think it’s a good pickup line? ‘Hey, cowboy, what’s your name?’
- Keith Urban: Well, not from you.
Everyone found that pretty funny, but now Keith Urban is in a position to really see if it actually works.
Just two episodes into the CBS competition, viewers have already noticed some moments that seem connected to the four-time Grammy winner’s recent divorce. For example, during the premiere, Keith Urban cautioned the contestants about the challenges of touring, stating:
Waking up feeling terrible on a tour bus at 3:30 AM, far from home, with another show to play and no sleep, it’s easy to question your choices. You might feel lonely, miss your family and friends, and just be completely miserable. But when you ask yourself why you’re putting yourself through it all, the only real answer is that this life – performing and touring – is simply what you were meant to do.
He performed “Straight Line” in Fort Worth, Texas – a song about breaking free from a draining existence. Interestingly, he wrote it around a year before his divorce from Nicole Kidman, making listeners speculate about the source of the unhappiness described in the lyrics.
As a big country music fan, I’ve always noticed how often heartbreak and raw emotion are central themes. Watching Keith Urban on The Road, it’s clear he’s an amazing mentor, and I wouldn’t be shocked if his guidance hinted at things happening in his own life – little glimpses of his personal experiences shining through.
Don’t miss the next adventures with him and Blake Shelton! New episodes air Sundays at 9 p.m. Eastern on CBS, and you can watch them on Paramount+ starting the next day.
