The new movie Song Sung Blue, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, is already being talked about as a potential Oscar contender after premiering at film festivals. Jackman is well-known for his roles in films like X-Men and The Greatest Showman, and Hudson has starred in popular romantic comedies such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Bride Wars.
Hugh Jackman and Frank Hudson will star in a new musical biopic, Song Sung Blue, coming out on December 25th. They play Mike and Claire Sardina, a couple who start a tribute band dedicated to the music of Neil Diamond in the 1980s. The film is based on a real-life story, originally told in a documentary with the same name.
The new film, Song Sung Blue, had its first showing at the AFI Film Festival on October 26th. Initial reviews suggest it could be an Oscar nominee, and many critics are praising the lead actress’s performance. Some are drawing comparisons between her work and acclaimed performances by Reese Witherspoon in Walk the Line, Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby, and Frances McDormand in Fargo.
Following the premiere of Song Sung Blue at the film festival, viewers and critics shared their initial thoughts on X. Many praised the film’s emotional impact, with @OscarFilmFC specifically highlighting Hudson’s powerful and touching performance as a key reason.
Even though some people had issues with parts of the movie, Hudson has still been the one getting the most positive attention online.
Joey Magidson admitted he was deeply touched by the film Song Sung Blue, finding it both heartbreaking and heartwarming, and said he hadn’t anticipated being so emotionally affected.
Twitter user @ryanmcquade77 said the movie Song Sung Blue reminded them of CODA, which was a big Oscar winner in 2022. CODA took home three Oscars, including awards for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor.
If Kate Hudson is nominated for Best Actress at the 2026 Academy Awards, it will be her first Oscar nomination in over two decades, following her recognition for the film Almost Famous in 2001. Although she didn’t win the Oscar that year, she did receive a Golden Globe award for the same performance.
Hugh Jackman has achieved significant acclaim, winning an Emmy, a Grammy, and two Tony Awards. He’s now one award away from becoming an EGOT – someone who has won all four major entertainment awards. He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the film adaptation of the musical Les Misérables.
Many musicals and movies about musicians have been recognized with Oscars, such as West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Chicago, Dreamgirls, Walk the Line, Ray, and La La Land. Song Sung Blue has the potential to be similarly honored if it wins an award this year.
I’m really hoping Hudson gets a Best Actress nomination! If she does, she’ll probably be up against some amazing actresses like Cynthia Erivo from Wicked: For Good, Jessie Buckley who was fantastic in Hamnet, and Amanda Seyfried in The Testament of Ann Lee. On the Best Actor side, it looks like Jackman could be competing with Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Michael B. Jordan (Sinners). It’s going to be a tough race!
The nominees for the 98th Academy Awards will be revealed on January 22, 2026. The awards ceremony will then be broadcast live on March 15.
Song Sung Blue will be released in theaters on December 25, 2026.
