Caroline Flack’s mother Christine reveals her ‘biggest regret’ after the former Love Island host’s tragic death as she and her children visit memorial bench in first-look Disney+ clip

Christine Flack, the mother of the late television presenter Caroline Flack, has shared her greatest regret following her daughter’s tragic death by suicide.

A new clip from the Disney+ documentary Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth shows Christine and her children – Paul, Elizabeth, and Caroline’s twin sister, Jody – visiting a memorial bench in north London to share memories of Caroline’s life.

Christine, who created a two-part series for the streaming service exploring the events leading up to Caroline’s death, shares that she feels a range of emotions when she visits a meaningful location, often reading a note she wrote to her daughter while there.

She said: ‘I come here, and you have different moods when you’re here, don’t you?

That day, I was feeling quite down. I wrote, “Another year has gone by, and I missed you just as deeply today as I did when you first left. I’m working hard to share your story and expose the people who caused you so much pain. I promise I won’t stop. I love you more than anything.”

Seeing their mother so unhappy, Elizabeth asked her, ‘Will you ever be happy enough to finally stop worrying and struggling?’

As someone who’s followed this story closely, I can tell you Christine has dedicated the last five years – ever since Caroline tragically passed away in February 2020 – to understanding what happened. This documentary really dives into those final, incredibly difficult months leading up to her suicide, and it’s a deeply personal look at her journey for answers.

Caroline Flack tragically died after losing her job as the host of Love Island and facing an assault charge related to an incident with her former partner, Lewis Burton.

Christine replied to Elizabeth, saying she wished she could put the struggle behind her and that it wouldn’t last forever. She explained that while you can’t fight endlessly, she would keep going until the truth was revealed.

Elizabeth expressed her concern that investigating these organizations would be incredibly difficult. She worried that their wealth and access to skilled lawyers would make it nearly impossible to uncover the truth.

On a rainy day, Paul, the brother of Christine and Caroline, shared that his sisters constantly think about their loved one, remembering her as they sat near her memorial bench.

Christine said she simply wanted to accomplish something, and she’d proceed as long as everyone was okay with it.

Caroline’s mother, who resides in Norfolk – the place where Caroline grew up and later won Strictly Come Dancing – has said her greatest regret is remaining silent in her daughter’s final months. The family had been cautioned against sharing their thoughts and feelings at that time.

Christine believes Caroline would approve of her current actions. She deeply regrets not speaking up sooner, before Caroline tragically passed away. Now, having already experienced the worst loss imaginable with Carrie’s death, she feels she has nothing left to fear.

Caroline became a popular TV personality, known for hosting hit shows like The X Factor, various I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! programs, and Love Island.

She also found success on Strictly Come Dancing, won a BAFTA award, and starred as Roxie Hart in Chicago on the West End stage.

When Caroline passed away, she was dating Lewis Burton, a former tennis player. She had recently been accused of attacking him after a disagreement at her home in North London.

Caroline said she hit Lewis with her phone after reading a message that led her to suspect he was cheating.

Caroline became upset and hurt herself after Lewis threatened to call the police, and before officers arrived.

Lewis wasn’t seriously hurt and didn’t need to go to the hospital, but Caroline was hospitalized and received treatment for twelve hours.

Following the incident, she faced criminal charges. Sadly, Caroline took her own life after discovering the case would continue even though Lewis had chosen not to pursue charges himself.

Christine told the Guardian’s G2 section on Monday that she thinks her daughter received different treatment from the Crown Prosecution Service due to her being a public figure.

As someone who cares deeply about this issue, I truly believe domestic violence needs to be treated with the seriousness it deserves. I’ve seen firsthand, through friends and acquaintances, the devastating impact of controlling and abusive relationships – people trapped with nowhere to turn and no help offered. It breaks my heart. But thankfully, the situation we’re talking about here wasn’t like those cases.

In a Disney+ documentary, former chief prosecutor Nazir Afzal stated he doesn’t understand why Caroline was put on trial.

Speaking in the film, he said: ‘The worst thing that should have happened is a caution.

It seems the only reason they’re pursuing this is because they’re worried about the criticism they’d face if they didn’t.

Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth is on Disney+ from 10 November
