Nia DaCosta, the director of films like The Marvels and Candyman, is returning with a new movie called Hedda. This film is a modern take on Henrik Ibsen’s play Hedda Gabler, reimagined with a Black perspective. It still explores the same themes of ambition and high-society secrets, all set against a backdrop of glamorous parties and stunning fashion.
Imogen Poots, who plays Thea in the film, said that wearing her costume was a real struggle. She told Digital Spy it was so uncomfortable, it ‘was the bane of my existence’.
She thought the dress was stunning to look at, calling it a beautiful work of art. However, she admitted it also made her feel uncomfortable.

It left me feeling incredibly insecure and uneasy – exactly the kind of emotions I needed to portray the character of Thea.
Interestingly, the corset fit so well that it still made eating lunch difficult – I didn’t get any relief there!

Being around those two impressive women and their characters really impacted me. They had such a strong presence, and their clothing seemed like a natural extension of who they were – they were simply stunning.
Poots added that Thea’s dress looked worn and shabby, and she recalled the costume designer describing the colors as resembling decaying fruit.
I really loved it, but I always felt a bit clumsy and weighed down, like I was just dragging myself through things.

I recently read an interview on Digital Spy where they spoke with director Rose DaCosta and Nina Hoss, who plays a really interesting character – she’s taking on the role of Eileen Lovborg, but with a gender swap. It was cool to hear their perspectives!
Hoss explained that the gender swap really resonated with him. He felt it intensified everything – problems, fears, and desires. He pointed out that the challenges Eileen now faces are quite different from those Eilert Lovborg dealt with in the past.
Hedda is in some select cinemas now, and will be released on Prime Video on Wednesday, 29 October.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can purchase Ariana & Witches at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
