IT: Welcome to Derry just delivered the most shocking first episode of 2025 – you need to see it

There are no IT: Welcome to Derry spoilers floating here.

A group of troubled kids in Derry are searching for a friend who has disappeared, all while being haunted by a mysterious and terrifying force. It feels a lot like the story of IT, doesn’t it? That’s intentional. IT: Welcome to Derry takes you back to this town 27 years before the original movie, setting the stage in 1962.

It’s understandable if you’re hesitant about a prequel to IT. The mystery surrounding It, especially Pennywise, is a big part of what makes the story enjoyable, and many fans wonder if it even needs explaining. However, we encourage you to watch IT: Welcome to Derry – the first episode alone is shockingly good and will likely grab your attention right away. It might just become your favorite show of 2025!

What to Read Next

The episode starts with a disturbing scene revealing the fate of their friend, Matty – it’s not good. We then meet Teddy, Phil, and Lilly. Teddy and Phil are good friends, but they only knew Matty casually, having been paid to attend his birthday. Lilly was closer to Matty, but their friendship fell apart after he confessed romantic feelings she didn’t share.

Everyone is understandably upset about Matty going missing, and each of them feels at least partially responsible. Since people in Derry rarely show concern, they decide to search for Matty themselves. They get help from Ronnie, whose father Hank works as the movie theater projectionist and was the last person to see Matty. Phil’s little sister, Susie, joins the search too – it’s hard to refuse anything to such a sweet kid.

Honestly, watching the beginning of IT: Welcome to Derry feels… predictable. We haven’t actually seen Pennywise yet, though you can definitely feel something creepy is happening in town. And it’s starting to look like everything I worried about – that this would just be a rehash of the original, made for a quick profit – is sadly coming true.

By the end of the first episode, you’ll know how wrong you’ve been.

We won’t spoil what happens in the episode, especially since you might not have been up late to watch it in the UK. Also, even though it’s October, there hasn’t been much talk about IT: Welcome to Derry just yet. If you weren’t planning on watching, we hope to change your mind!

The first episode ends with a truly shocking scene. It’s violent, disturbing, and incredibly daring – a climax that will leave you breathless and eager for more. Paired with a remarkably brave opening, it makes you question how the creators managed to pull it off, and they seem to be surprised themselves!

While we were filming, I was constantly waiting for the news – you know, the call saying we’d been renewed! But we just kept delivering these scenes and episodes, and honestly, the response was amazing. People really loved what we were doing, and we’ve been so fortunate to have the studio’s support throughout it all.

Jason Fuchs, a co-showrunner and the writer of the first episode, explained they aimed to create truly shocking horror. He described the show as uncompromising and intensely frightening, not holding back on scares or gore.

People may have discussed the entire show, but after watching the first episode, you’ll realize the final scene is shockingly impactful and unforgettable.

As the first season of IT: Welcome to Derry unfolds, it might settle into a more typical horror format, making the unique feel of the first episode stand out. However, it does a great job of creating a consistently unsettling atmosphere, leaving you wondering who will survive.

As a huge fan of the book, I’m really excited about how the show is diving into those historical interludes – you know, the parts where Mike Hanlon explains everything about It’s past in Derry. It means we’re going to see some cool events and characters like Mike’s grandpa, Leroy, who seem pretty safe. But honestly, that’s a good thing! It gives the showrunners a lot of freedom to really shock us and kill off characters without messing up the established story too much. I’m here for the chaos!

The first episode of IT: Welcome to Derry clearly shows the creators are determined to make the most of this opportunity.

IT: Welcome to Derry airs new episodes every Monday on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
