Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show Future Remains Uncertain

Jon Stewart has hosted Comedy Central’s The Daily Show for many years, both continuously and with breaks. However, it looks like his time with the show may soon be coming to a close, which is sad news for him and his viewers.

Jon Stewart began hosting The Daily Show in 1999 and left in 2015. He returned in February 2024 to cover the presidential election, appearing on Monday nights. His contract was quickly extended through December 2025. While Stewart has said he’d like to continue and reassured fans he plans to stay, a new contract hadn’t been officially agreed upon as of this writing.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, David Remnick of The New Yorker inquired whether the comedian would consider renewing his contract with The Daily Show. The comedian replied that they are currently in discussions to continue with the show, and added that he would like to remain the host if it were his decision.

The discussion with Remnick shifted to politics when Jimmy Kimmel’s short suspension was mentioned. The editor remembered Stewart saying he wasn’t planning to step down, especially after other late-night hosts expressed concerns about losing their jobs. Stewart admitted he was anxious when he said that, but he still intended to defend free speech, even if it meant risking his position. He explained, “You stick to your principles and continue doing your work until you’re asked to stop.”

Stewart explained how the episode of The Daily Show that criticized both President Trump and Disney for removing Kimmel from the air was made.

It was definitely a shock to everyone, but it also sparked a lot of creativity. Honestly, we probably haven’t had that much fun since that Thursday morning, brainstorming all the silly ideas you see now – things like the gold images and red ties. It really gave us something to focus on and work towards.

New episodes of The Daily Show air Monday-Thursday at 11 PM Eastern Time on Comedy Central, with a repeat showing at 8 PM Eastern Time. You can also find longer episodes streaming on Paramount+.
